San Diego had hoped the 39-year-old Canó would provide some muchneeded offense against righthande­d pitching but he batted just .091 (3 for 33) without an extra-base hit in 12 games. He struck out 10 times and had one RBI for the Padres after getting released by the New York Mets last month.

Rangers acquired minor league right-hander Yohanse Morel from the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night for pitcher Albert Abreu, who had been designated for assignment by the Rangers three days earlier. Morel was assigned to High-a Hickory of the South Atlantic League. He was 2-2 with a 4.08 ERA (eight earned runs in 17⅔ innings) over 10 relief appearance­s for High-a Quad Cities.

PRO FOOTBALL: The Buffalo Bills 3 have added experience­d depth to an already crowded receiver group by signing Tavon Austin to a one-year contract. The Bills made the signing official by announcing it Friday, a day after Austin revealed the move by posting a message on social media. Austin was an unrestrict­ed free agent after appearing in seven games last season with the Jacksonvil­le Jaguars. He had 24 catches for 213 yards and a touchdown.

Smith surged into a two-stroke lead in the second round of the European Open on Friday, seeking his second tour win five years after his first came at the same venue in Winsen, Germany. Smith posted a 4-under-par 68 as several other early contenders struggled.
