PRO SOCCER: Paris’ police chief 2 apologized for and justified the pepper-spraying of fans amid the chaos that engulfed the Champions League final last month. At a Senate hearing, police prefect Didier Lallement said the evening was “a failure’’ but maintained police were responding to tens of thousands of supporters without tickets or with forged tickets. “We made sure that the game was held and, most importantl­y, that there were no serious injuries and no deaths,” Lallement said.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Jocelyn Alo and Tiare Jennings helped Oklahoma move a victory away from successful­ly defending its Women’s College World Series title. Each hit two home runs as top-seeded Oklahoma set a World Series record with six homers, rolling past Texas 16-1 Wednesday night in Game 1 of the best-of-three championsh­ip series. Oklahoma (58-3) also matched World Series records for runs and victory margin. The teams were set to meet again Thursday in Game 2, with Oklahoma in position to win its sixth national title.

PRO SOCCER: Real Madrid extended Luka Modric’s contract, keeping intact the midfield that helped the club win a recordexte­nding 14th European title. The Croatian, 36, signed a new deal with the club until June 2023 and will return to play alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro, the trio that helped Madrid win five Champions League titles in the last nine seasons.
