1 PRO BASEBALL: Cleveland Guardians catcher Austin Hedges was placed on the 7-day injured list with a concussion Tuesday, forcing the team to acquire veteran Sandy León in a trade with Cincinnati. Hedges took a foul tip off his protective mask last weekend and was showing concussionlike symptoms Monday despite passing all neurological tests. He didn’t play in the series opener.
2 WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Rutgers hired former Tennessee star Nikki Mccray-penson as an assistant coach. Mccray-penson has 15 years of college coaching experience, most recently as head coach at Mississippi State and Old Dominion. She played nine seasons in the WNBA and won gold medals with Team USA at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
3 PRO BASKETBALL: The Seattle Storm signed five-time first-team ALL-WNBA center Tina Charles for the rest of the season Tuesday, three days after she was let go by Phoenix. Charles, 33, was averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in 16 games this season with the Mercury before the sides settled on a contract divorce last weekend.
4 TRACK AND FIELD: Swiss sprinter Alex Wilson was banned for four years after an anti-doping tribunal judged he intentionally used an anabolic steroid. Wilson, the 200 bronze medalist at the 2018 European Championships, tested positive for the steroid trenbolone in March 2021.
5 TRACK AND FIELD : The daughter of a Vatican employee will represent“the pope’s team”by competing in the half marathon at the Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria, on Friday. It will mark the biggest event yet for Vatican Athletics, the latest iteration of the Holy See’s longstanding promotion of sport as an instrument of dialogue, peace and solidarity.
