1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Longtime South Dakota State coach John Stiegelmeier announced his retirement Thursday, less than two weeks after the school won its first Football Championship Subdivision title. Defensive coordinator Jimmy Rogers was named Stiegelmeier’s successor. Stiegelmeier wrapped up his career with a 45-21 win over rival North Dakota State in the championship game Jan. 8.

PRO SOCCER: Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves was arrested Friday after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Spain and a judge later denied bail for the former Barcelona defender. The alleged assault took place Dec. 31 at a night club in Barcelona, police said. Alves was taken into custody after he answered a police summons. State prosecutors had asked for him to be held without bail, and a judge agreed.

Spain has won the challenging third stage of the Tour Down Under race in Adelaide, Australia, while Jay Vine — who was in third place — has taken a 15-second lead on general classification. The stage favored climbers over sprinters. It was decided on the short but steep Corkscrew ascent not far from the finish.

Olympic middle-distance runner and 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Peter Bol has tested positive to a banned performance-enhancing drug. Athletics Australia says Bol, the national 800-meter record holder, failed an out-of-competition test Oct. 11. The 28-year-old tested positive to the banned drug erythropoietin, known as EPO.
