THE HOT CORNER
SOCCER: Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to lead a 6-0 rout of Luxembourg in European Championship qualifying as the Portugal star added to his records for international goals and appearances Sunday. The double from Ronaldo took his career tally for Portugal to 122 goals in 198 games.
CYCLING: Christophe Laporte won the first one-day classic race of his career after the Frenchman and teammate Wout van Aert secured a 1-2 finish at Gentwevelgem for the Jumbo-visma team on Sunday. In heavy rain, the duo resisted the peloton’s chase in the 162-mile race through Belgium after a breakaway they launched on a steep ascent. Van Aert and Laporte celebrated together on their way to the finish line, with the 2021 winner happy to let Laporte take the win by a few centimeters.
MEN’S SOCCER: Presented with a golden boot before kickoff, Harry Kane’s golden touch continued for England on Sunday as he struck a record-extending 55th goal for his country. The Tottenham striker had already surpassed Wayne Rooney as the Three Lions’ outright leading scorer with his penalty in Thursday’s 2-1 win against Italy in Naples. Back at Wembley, he got the chance to celebrate in front of his home fans with another goal in England’s 2-0 win against Ukraine, in the qualifiers for the European Championship. Kane struck in the 37th minute. Saka got on the scoresheet three minutes later.
PRO BASKETBALL: Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic picked up his 16th technical foul of the season Sunday and now faces a one-game suspension for tonight’s game against the Pacers.
BOAT RACE: It’s four wins out of five for Cambridge in one of England’s oldest sporting events — starting in 1829 — after it beat Oxford in the men’s Boat Race on Sunday on the River Thames.
