Jay Woodcroft is out as Edmonton coach after 10 losses in the season’s first 13 games, fired after a road trip that ended with a 4-1 win at Seattle. That followed a four-game losing streak, including 3-2 at Nhl-worst San Jose. Kris Knoblauch, Connor Mcdavid’s junior hockey coach, was named Woodcroft’s replacemen­t, the Oilers’ 10th coach in 15 seasons.

A team in the city that was the site of a mass shooting more than two weeks ago won the state title. The Lewiston Blue Devils beat Deering 3-2 Saturday in the Class A championsh­ip game in Oakland, Maine. The shootings Oct. 25 in Lewiston killed 18 people and injured 13 others, the deadliest mass shooting in Maine history.“we have been saying the past few weeks, ‘Do it for the city,’ ” Lewiston goalie Payson Goyette said.

Kenya’s Edwin Kiptoo, 30, won the Athens Marathon in a course-record 2 hours, 10 minutes, 34 seconds. Kenya’s Rhonzai Lokitam Kilimo came in second at 2:12:36 and Felicien Muhitira of Rwanda was third in the same time. Kenyans have won the race 17 times since 2001, including Felix Kandie, who set the previous record of 2:10:37 in 2014. Soukaina Atanane of Morocco won the women’s race in 2:31:52, Kenya’s Caroline Jepchirchi­r was runner-up in 2:32:19, and Greece’s Gloria Privileggi­o came in third at 2:43:20.

Shiffrin won a World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland, after first-run leader Petra Vlhova looked set for another clear victory until she straddled a gate and did not finish her final run. Vlhova, who dominated Saturday on the same hill, extended her lead of 0.76 seconds over Shiffrin from the opening leg to more than a second when the Slovakian failed to clear a gate. Shiffrin secured a record-extending 89th career World Cup win, 0.18 ahead of Leona Popovic of Croatia, 0.30 ahead of third-place Lena Duerr of Germany. Shiffrin’s win followed a week in which the American had to reduce her time on snow after bruising a bone in her left knee.
