‘Bachelor’ star reveals his Gilbert syndrome diagnosis

Joey Graziadei let concerned fans know his health is optimal.

Joey Graziadei, the lead on the current season of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” has taken to social media to address speculation and concern over his appearance.

After viewers of the reality show openly wondered about the yellowish tinge in the whites of his eyes, Graziadei took to Instagram to reveal he’d been diagnosed with Gilbert syndrome during his high school years — but promised fans that he’s healthy.

In the video posted Thursday, Graziadei said he learned of his diagnosis after being sick for about a week and a half, when his mom decided to seek medical attention.

“It’s something that does affect the whites of my eyes, giving them that jaundiced appearance,” Graziadei said. “It’s something I want to pay more attention to going into this year. I want to ensure my health is optimal. But I wanted to provide some background and reassure you that, to my knowledge, I am healthy.”

The professional tennis coach said he plans to focus more on staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep and managing his stress levels.

“I do appreciate everyone looking out for me and wondering if I’m OK, but to my knowledge, I’m as OK as can be, and I will continue to monitor it. So thank you very much,” he concluded.

Pronounced zheel-BAYR, the genetic liver disorder affects the way the body processes bilirubin, a yellowish substance that’s produced during the body’s normal breakdown of old red blood

cells.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, an estimated 3% to 7% of Americans have Gilbert’s syndrome, which is caused when a person inherits a mutated UGT1A1 gene. It’s more common in males than in females.
