PRO BASKETBALL:

1 Donovan Mitchell’s left knee injury might keep the All-Star guard out longer than the Cavaliers initially estimated. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff provided some clarity about Mitchell’s injury — deemed a bone bruise by the team — on Tuesday night, saying it had built up over time. Mitchell, who leads Cleveland in scoring and led the team through a tough stretch of injuries, will miss at least three games. Bickerstaff indicated Mitchell could be out more than that.“I expect him to be back before a month,” Bickerstaff said before the Cavs hosted the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics.

PRO BASKETBALL:

2 Former Hawks point guard Patty Mills has agreed to sign with the Miami Heat for the remainder of the season, a person with knowledge of the deal said Tuesday. The Heat will waive injured guard Dru Smith to make room for Mills on the roster, according to the person. Mills played in 19 games with Atlanta off the bench this season before getting waived on Feb. 29, in time to preserve his postseason eligibility with another team. The Heat will become the fifth NBA team that Mills has played for, along with San Antonio, Portland, Brooklyn and the Hawks.

PRO HOCKEY:

3 Stanley Cup contenders aren’t waiting until the NHL trade deadline day to shore up depth for what they hope is a long playoff run. The league-leading Florida Panthers got deeper on the wing on Wednesday by acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko from Ottawa, and the Colorado Avalanche loaded up by getting defenseman Sean Walker from Philadelphia and center Casey Mittelstadt from Buffalo in separate trades. Colorado traded a top-10 protected 2025 first-round pick and center Ryan Johansen to Philadelphia for Walker and a fifth-rounder in 2026 and got Mittelstadt in a one-for-one trade that sent defenseman Bowen Byram to the Sabres. The Panthers sent a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft to Ottawa for Tarasenko.

PRO HOCKEY:

4 The Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin on Wednesday to a five-year contract worth $23 million. He will count $4.6 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 NHL season. Sandin, who was set to become a restricted free agent this summer, has rounded out his game since joining the Capitals a year ago from Toronto.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

5 West Virginia coach Neal Brown has signed a one-year contract extension that includes a $400,000 pay cut over the next three seasons. Brown will be paid $4 million in each of the next two seasons, a reduction of $100,000 in 2024 and $200,000 in 2025 from a previous contract signed in 2021. He’ll make $4.3 million in 2026 and $4.4 million in 2027.
