1 At least 50 injured in mid-air incident:

At least 50 people have been injured after a Latam Airlines Group SA flight from Sydney to Auckland suffered a midair incident. The flight, on a Boeing Co. 787-9 aircraft, experience­d a technical problem that caused a strong movement and resulted in some passengers being injured on Monday, the New Zealand Herald reported, citing an unidentifi­ed airline spokespers­on. About a dozen people were transporte­d to Auckland hospitals, including one patient in serious condition. The flight was LA800, which typically stops in the New Zealand city before heading on to Santiago in Chile.

Five missing skiers found 2 dead in Switzerlan­d:

Five cross-country skiers — including members of the same Swiss family — were found dead along a high Alpine ridge after going missing over the weekend near Switzerlan­d’s famed Matterhorn, Swiss police said. Another skier remains missing. The commander of Valais regional police said the six skiers set out in “relatively good” conditions on Saturday but that the situation deteriorat­ed quickly. They were on a route between the resort town of Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, and the village of Arolla, near the border with Italy.

Beached whale dies along 3 Florida’s Gulf Coast:

A large sperm whale that drew national attention after beaching itself on a sandbar died Monday, state wildlife officials said. The whale was measured at about 44 feet long, roughly the size of a large school bus, and weighs as much as 70,000 pounds. Police and wildlife officials began trying Sunday morning to free the male whale just off the beach in Venice, Florida.

Indigenous groups look to stop 4 cross-border pollution:

The U.S., Canada and several indigenous groups announced a proposal to address pollution from coal mining in British Columbia that officials say has been contaminat­ing waterways and harming fisheries on both sides of the border for years. The proposal would be executed through a century-old U.S.-Canada boundary waters treaty. Scientists from the U.S. Environmen­tal Protection Agency several years ago confirmed high levels of selenium in fish and eggs in Montana’s Kootenai River downstream of Lake Koocanusa, which straddles the U.S. Canada border.

5 Report: Teens happier away from smartphone­s:

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. teens say they feel happy or peaceful when they don’t have their phones with them, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. In a survey published Monday, Pew also found that despite the positive associatio­ns with going phone-free, most teens have not limited their phone or social media use.
