Coroner identifies victim in shooting outside funeral home

The Kern County coroner’s office has identified the victim in Thursday’s fatal shooting outside Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles St. in east Bakersfiel­d.

Darren Anthony Thomas, 28, from Los Angeles, was shot and killed at 11:55 a.m. He died at the scene at 12:23 p.m., according to the coroner.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is investigat­ing the incident as a homicide.

The Kern County coroner’s office has identified the victim of a Sept. 14 fatal shooting in the 2000 block of Dracena Street at Beale Park.

Glenn Earl Henderson Jr., 26, was shot and killed at 8 a.m., according to the coroner.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department is investigat­ing this incident.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is investigat­ing a suspected homicide in east

Bakersfiel­d early Sunday morning.

According to a KCSO news release, responding deputies found a 33-year-old man in the roadway in the 3100 block of Lake Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at 12:20 a.m.

The news release said paramedics from Hall Ambulance tried life-saving measures on the victim but he was pronounced dead at Kern Medical.

The Kern County coroner’s office has identified the victim of a fatal bicycle accident on Sept. 5 in the 6700 block of White Lane.

Jeremiah Adam Vanscoy, 36, appeared to have fallen off his bike and struck his head on the ground, according to a coroner’s report.

He was taken to Kern Medical where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m.

A postmortem examinatio­n was performed and the cause of death is pending further investigat­ion.

The California Highway Patrol is investigat­ing a fatal traffic accident Monday morning at the intersecti­on of Burbank Street and Scaroni Avenue.

At around 7 a.m. the driver of a Nissan Altima entered the intersecti­on of Burbank Street and Scaroni Avenue, CHP said in a news release. An SUV heading north on Scaroni Avenue approached the intersecti­on and struck the Altima broadside on the driver’s side door, CHP said. Both vehicles struck a fence from a nearby business.

The driver of the Altima was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the accident, CHP said.

A Kern County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was involved in a fatal traffic accident on Saturday with a motorcycli­st on Highway 178 near the Upper Richbar campground.

According to a news release from the California Highway Patrol, the Bakersfiel­d Communicat­ion Center received a call just after 11 a.m. of a tcrash. CHP officers and Kern Valley Resident Post responded to the scene.

According to CHP, a motorcycli­st was traveling east on Highway 178 while a KCSO patrol vehicle was traveling west. The motorcycli­st lost control, laid the motorcycle on its side and slid into the eastbound lane directly in the path of the KCSO patrol vehicle, the news release stated. The patrol vehicle struck the rider, who was provided medical aid before being pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said in the release.

The stretch of Highway 178 was closed from Rancheria Road to Old Kern Canyon Road for approximat­ely nine hours following the accident, CHP said.

Alcohol and/or drugs didn’t appear to be a factor in the accident, according to CHP.

The Kern County coroner’s office has identified a 13-yearold boy involved in a Sept. 6 fatal traffic accident on Highway 58 at Claymine Road near North Edwards.

Nasir Gordon was a passenger in a vehicle that lost control and overturned at 1:35 p.m. He was taken to Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley hospital where he died at 4:12 p.m., according to the coroner’s report.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a Los Angeles man as the victim of a fatal traffic accident on Sept. 14 on Interstate 5 at Laval Road near Arvin.

Robert Lee Cooks Jr., 27, was the driver of a vehicle that lost control and crashed at 6:38 a.m.

He died at the scene of the accident.

The California Highway Patrol is investigat­ing this incident.
