US jobless claims rise to 885K

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans applying for unemployme­nt benefits rose again last week to 885,000, the highest weekly total since September, as a resurgence of coronaviru­s cases threatens the economy’s recovery from its springtime collapse.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of applicatio­ns increased from 862,000 the previous week. It showed that nine months after the virus paralyzed the economy, many employers are still slashing jobs as the pandemic forces more business restrictio­ns and leads many consumers to stay home.

President-elect Joe Biden plans to nominate New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland as interior secretary, according to two people familiar with the decision, a historic pick that would make her the first Native American to lead the powerful federal agency that has wielded influence over the nation’s tribes for generation­s.

Tribal leaders and activists around the country, along with many Democratic figures, cheered Haaland’s selection after urging Biden for weeks to choose her.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — More than 300 schoolboys abducted last week by armed men in northwest Nigeria have been released, the Katsina State governor said Thursday.

In an announceme­nt on Nigerian state TV, NTA, Gov. Aminu Bello Masari said the 344 boarding school students were turned over to security officials and were being brought to the capital of Katsina, where they will get physical examinatio­ns before being reunited with their families.
