Woman convicted of murder is found dead

A woman convicted of second-degree murder in November was found dead last month at the Lerdo Jail’s Pre-Trial Facility.

According to a report from the Kern County coroner’s office, 29-year-old Marvinesha Shawnee Johnson was found unresponsi­ve at the facility at 4:42 p.m. Dec. 26. Johnson did not respond to life-saving efforts and was declared dead at the scene, the report stated.

Johnson was convicted of second-degree murder in November after being accused of killing a man in north-central Bakersfiel­d, a spokespers­on from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

According to a previous news release from the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, Johnson killed Brent Cannady on Q Street, just south of 34th Street, on Aug. 5, 2019. She faced up to 40 years to life in prison for the killing, the DA said.

According to the news release, Cannady and a friend discovered Johnson trying to steal a bike outside an apartment near the 3300 block of Q Street. After they got the bike back, Johnson followed them into the apartment and shot Cannady four times from close range. He died the next day.

Police are investigat­ing a fatal hit-and-run that involved a pedestrian victim and two vehicles on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of Panama Lane at around 6:50 p.m. According to a news release from the Bakersfiel­d Police

Department, officers were dispatched to the area and located a woman in the road suffering major injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

BPD said an investigat­ion revealed the woman was crossing the road when she was struck by a silver or white Mercedes sedan. Moments later, she was struck again by a second vehicle, which BPD said was a red Chevrolet Silverado. Both vehicles fled, police said. The identity of the woman was not immediatel­y available.

The Bakersfiel­d Fire Department’s Investigat­ion Unit is asking for community assistance in locating a suspect who was involved in a fire that occurred at a Fastrip gas station and convenienc­e store in southwest Bakersfiel­d.

The incident occurred Jan. 9 at 6401 White Lane.

BFD said the suspect is a white man, who was last seen wearing black pants, a red shirt with white lettering, a black hooded jacket, black hat and a white mask. The man appeared to have a tattoo under his left eye, according to the fire department.
