The Bakersfield Police Department has released a community debriefing for an officer-involved shooting that occurred Dec. 18 at the 8700 block of Maria Angelica Street.

The debriefing contains body cam footage of the incident, and a breakdown of the events that occurred, although the matter remains under review.

In the video, BPD says officers were dispatched at 4 p.m. to Maria Angelica Street for a man holding a gun to his head. The department says family members had tried to take the firearm, but were unsuccessful.

A Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services team was dispatched to assist officers, according to the video.

At 4:26 p.m., BPD says an officer assigned to watch the residence where the suspect had fled noticed the door was open and the involved man was standing in the road. The officer said he saw a firearm in the man’s waistband, according to BPD.

When officers approached the man, he reportedly removed the firearm from his waistband. At that point, BPD says an officer fired a foam bullet, which had no effect.

When the suspect fled, he fired several times, striking one officer and grazing another, BPD said. Pursuing officers returned fire, the department report said. The suspect later died at a hospital.

In a separate report, the Kern County coroner’s office identified the suspect as Jonathan George Brown, 29, of Bakersfield.

BPD listed the involved officers as Senior Officer Andrew Ferguson, Senior Officer Marc Lugo, Officer Joshua Ince, Officer Anthony Flores, Officer Kelton Beattie and Officer William Vining.

All officers were wearing body cameras.

“The public has a legitimate interest in obtaining timely and accurate information about police shootings, and the Bakersfield Police

Department is committed to making that information available,” BPD Chief Greg Terry said in a statement. “We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”
