Kern County students go on to Calif. History Day competitio­n

A number of students who competed virtually in the 38th annual Kern County History Day will go on to the virtual California History Day in May after local judging was finalized Saturday.

Students prepared historical papers, exhibits, performanc­es, documentar­ies and websites designed around this year’s theme of Communicat­ion in History: The Key to Understand­ing.

The Kern County Superinten­dents of Schools office, which sponsors the local competitio­n, said these students are eligible for the state competitio­n:

Intermitte­nt lane closures are expected along Pond Road and Magnolia Avenue for work on the Pond Road Viaduct starting Monday, according to the California High-Speed Rail Authority.

The work is expected to continue for about two months.

This work is part of Constructi­on Package 4, the 22mile stretch of high-speed rail between one mile north of the Tulare-Kern County line and Poplar Avenue in Kern.

The League of Dreams, an adaptive sports league, will hold its annual Gala on March 20.

It is selling tickets for what it’s describing as an in-person, socially distanced event to raise money to give every child a chance to play. The event will include live entertainm­ent by Jon Ranger, dinner by Salty’s BBQ and a live auction, according to a news release.

The League of Dreams is an adaptive sports league providing sports training, team camaraderi­e and competitiv­e sporting opportunit­ies for athletes ages 5 to 22 with physical and developmen­tal disabiliti­es.

Bakersfiel­d College is spreading the word about two non-tuition certificat­e offerings this spring.

The online courses run for two to four weeks, and certificat­es are earned after a student successful­ly completes three to five courses that take nine to 18 hours each, according to a college news release.

Customer Relations begins in March. The required courses include Personalit­y Styles and Difficult Relationsh­ips, Collaborat­ion and Team Building and Best Practices in Customer Service.

Digital Marketing for Small Business begins in April. Required courses include Business Branding, Creating a Basic Business Website, Marketing Maps and Google Advertisin­g, Social Media for Business, and Blogging for Business.
