Barbara Meek, 83, passed away on March 9, 2021 in Bakersfield, California. Barbara was born on July 23, 1937 to Leo and Lilyan Meek in Clinton, OK. Her family moved to Bakersfield in 1947. As a girl Barbara loved to learn dance and modeling. She graduated in 1955 from Bakersfield High School which was then called Kern County High School where she had many friends. She loved telling stories of going to Dewar’s Ice Cream Parlor and Michener’s Drive-In with her friends many of whom she remained close to for over 65 years. Barbara married Charles Melton in 1956 and they had a daughter, Cheryl, in 1958.

Barbara had a long career in sales. She owned a cosmetic business in San Luis Obispo for several years. She moved to Tiburon, California where she happily lived and worked for over fifteen years. She was a sales representative for numerous well-known accessory and jewelry lines and her territory included all central and northern California. Her family loved traveling to stay with her in Tiburon and she showed them all the beautiful areas in San Francisco.

Barbara returned to Bakersfield in 1990 where she worked as a sales associate/ manager at Harris Department Store. She was also very proud of her daughter who works at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. Her nieces and nephews remember their Aunt Barb as always being fun, generous and kind to them. She was a wonderful cook and she loved to introduce new recipes for her family. She enjoyed family trips to the beach and mountains. One of her most enjoyable trips was to Yellowstone where she learned to fly fish and saw geysers, bison and elk.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Cheryl Melton of Rochester, MN; her brothers, Jerry Meek and Russell Meek (Rachel); nephews and nieces including Justin Meek (Becky), Becky Clawson (Chris), Hilary Klarc (Alan), Marshall Meek (Fran) and Russ Meek. She also has grand nephews Aidan, Garrett, William and Nolan Meek, Miles Clawson, and grand niece Lily Clawson; and dear friends Charlene Pittman and Huguette Jennings. Barbara will be missed by all of us.
