BPD: Man suffers life-threatenin­g injuries in southwest collision

A man suffered life-threatenin­g injuries Saturday night in a collision at Stockdale Highway and Buena Vista Road, Bakersfiel­d Police said.

Police said the vehicle with the injured passenger was going south on Buena Vista Road and crossed Stockdale Highway against a red light at about 9:58 p.m. when it was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Stockdale Highway, according to a Bakersfiel­d Police Department news release.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the collision and the parties remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigat­ion. The injured passenger was taken to a hospital.

BPD asks that anyone with informatio­n call 327-7111.

A Bakersfiel­d Police Department DUI and driver’s license checkpoint held Saturday night into Sunday morning turned up one person who was driving under the influence, plus a felony warrant suspect, 20 unlicensed drivers and 12 people driving on suspended licenses.

The checkpoint took place from 6 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Bernard Street. BPD screened 324

vehicles.

Police remind the public to call 991 if a suspected impaired driver is seen.

Late Saturday night Bakersfiel­d Police arrested a suspect on suspicion of murder and gang participat­ion in connection with a man’s death in the 1000 block of East 3rd Street on Friday.

Oscar Valero, 47, was arrested by detectives at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday and booked into Kern County Jail, according to a Bakersfiel­d Police Department news release.

The name of the victim in the shooting has not been released.

Police said the investigat­ion is continuing and ask that anyone with informatio­n call Detective Randy Petris at 326-3554 or BPD at 327-7111.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a person died in a vehicle crash on eastbound Highway 58 just west of Broome Road near Keene on Sunday.

Initial reports were that a vehicle went off the road around 12:05 p.m. The vehicle also caught on fire, the CHP reported, and the Kern County Fire Department was called.

No other informatio­n was available.
