Man gets life in prison for 2016 double murder

A man found guilty of two counts of murder and robbery was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibilit­y of parole for a 2016 shooting in a Lamont convenienc­e store that killed a father and son, said the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Jim Langston served as the getaway driver for the incident, according to a DA’s news release. His co-defendant Darrell Hammond was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 5.

On Oct. 14, 2016, Heriberto Aceves and his son Juan were working in their family’s convenienc­e store. Before 10 a.m., a group of three masked men with guns entered the store and demanded money. Hammond shot both men, according to the news release.

Hammond remained in the store to collect cash, but two of the robbers had already fled in a getaway car. Hammond was eventually arrested after Kern County Sheriff’s deputies found him hiding in a neighbor’s shed.

Langston was arrested many days later and acknowledg­ed his role as the getaway driver, the DA’s news release said.

A 17-year-old boy died in a traffic crash Tuesday morning, according to the Bakersfiel­d Police Department.

Police officers were dispatched to Ming Avenue and Calle Salida regarding a crash. At the scene, officers found a car had rammed into a brick wall, the BPD said in a news release.

The teenage boy, who was the driver, was taken to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries, the news release added. This crash is the 44th fatal traffic incident of the year the BPD has investigat­ed.

The Kern County coroner’s office will release the identity of the deceased.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a pedestrian killed in Frazier Park on Nov. 5.

Gerardo Lofra Luevano, 59, died at 5:50 a.m. on Frazier Mountain Park Road, west of Grand Terrace Estates, from multiple blunt force traumas. He is from Lebec.

The coroner ruled the death an accident.

The identity of a man killed Monday in Wasco has been released by the Kern County coroner.

Ezequiel Kevin Cabada Barraza died at Kern Medical. The 30-yearold Wasco man was shot in the 2100 block of 2nd Street in Wasco.

A man was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison for killing one man and injuring another by stabbing them in 2020.

Alan Oaks pleaded no contest to involuntar­y manslaught­er and assault with a deadly weapon in October. Charges such as first-degree murder were dismissed, according to the Kern County Superior Court.

The Kern County coroner’s office said Danny Wayne Barham, a 55-year-old Taft man, was stabbed Aug. 21 in Tupman along the 400 block of Moose Street. Deputies found and arrested Oaks in Oildale, according to previous reporting by The California­n.

A vehicle struck and killed a 26-year-old Bakersfiel­d man on Nov. 5, according to the coroner’s office.

Tyelor Jamal Henry-Dever was struck in the 7500 block of Ming Avenue. He died at Kern Medical from multiple blunt force traumas. The coroner ruled the death an accident.

A fire erupted in a former bowling alley in Delano on Monday night, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

Fire officials received reports around 7 p.m. of a fire at 1645 Ellington St., in a building previously called Stardust Lanes. Flames were extinguish­ed in approximat­ely five hours, KCFD spokeswoma­n Erica Bain said in an email.

The cause is under investigat­ion and had not been determined as of Tuesday.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance to find a missing woman last seen in February.

Billi Jo Yocum, 36, is about 5 foot, 3 inches and weighs 155 pounds. She has blond hair and green eyes.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department seeks help finding a missing, at-risk 16-year-old girl.

Abrahlyn Amador was last seen at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the 8700 block of Worrell Court. She is considered at risk because she has no history of running away.

Amador is a 5-foot-3 inch Hispanic girl and weighs about 160 pounds. She has long brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt, ripped jeans and blue shoes.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department requests the community’s help finding an at-risk 14-yearold girl missing since Monday.

Melainie Marshall was last seen at 5:30 p.m. in the 600 block of A Street. She is about 5 foot, 3 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. She has blue eyes and wavy, red hair.

She was last seen wearing a black sweater and black sweats. Anyone with informatio­n about this case can call the BPD at 661-327-7111.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is offering students a chance to train at the Kern Regional Law Enforcemen­t Training Academy in January 2022 to gain experience in law enforcemen­t.

Graduates from the CORE academy can apply to entry-level detentions deputy positions within KCSO and correction­al officer positions with other law enforcemen­t agencies in California.

The academy is approximat­ely three months and will run from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Kern Regional Training Center. Applicants must pass the STC CORE Entry Level Exam, personal history statement and oral interview to be selected.
