KCFD: Two attendees of Lightning in a Bottle festival die

The Kern County Fire Department reported Thursday that two attendees of the Lighting in a Bottle music festival, which took place over the weekend at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation­al Area, died outside of the event.

KCFD personnel treated two people who “suffered an acute medical emergency,” according to a KCFD news release. One person died Saturday at a hospital and the other died Sunday “outside of the main festival area.”

Fire officials and emergency medical services personnel responded to 30 calls for medical service, of which 24 involved patients who needed to be taken to local hospitals. Two non-medical calls for service were also fielded. These incidents happened over six days, from May 25 to Monday, according to the news release.

The KCFD also noted this year’s festival saw a “peak attendance” of roughly 27,000 people and triple-digit temperatur­es.

Bakersfiel­d Police Department officers arrested a man as part of an attempted murder investigat­ion after a stabbing

Wednesday in the 1200 block of East 19th Street.

BPD officers responded to a stabbing at 11 p.m. and attempted to contact Rodney Bagsby, 43, of Bakersfiel­d, as he was leaving the scene in a vehicle, according to a BPD news release.

Bagsby briefly exited the vehicle, brandished a knife at officers and made statements that he would not be going back to prison and that officers would have to kill him, the release noted.

Bagsby re-entered his vehicle prior to officers being able to take him into custody, leading them on a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, Bagsby intentiona­lly accelerate­d his vehicle and traveled through a guardrail and over the bluffs at Panorama Park.

Bagsby sustained major injuries in the collision and was taken to an area hospital where he is in stable condition.

BPD officials reported that after his treatment, Bagsby is going to be arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and felony evading.

The stabbing victim also was taken to a hospital, and is in stable condition.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department is investigat­ing a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision involving a juvenile,

according to a BPD news release.

BPD officers Wednesday responded to a collision at 7:42 p.m. in the 5400 block of Seasons Drive and found a juvenile who was hit by a car and suffering from life-threatenin­g injuries.

While officers on scene immediatel­y began rendering first aid, the child was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the incident.

The identity of the underage pedestrian has not yet been released.
