Movies in the Park ready to rock tonight with ‘Trolls: World Tour’

Families already looking to make summer plans can add some free movie screenings to the list.

Movies in the Park, the Recreation & Parks Department series that runs through June and July in Bakersfiel­d parks, kicks off tonight with the “Trolls: World Tour” at The Park at River Walk, 11200 Stockdale Highway.

Free screenings continue at various parks each Friday night through July 29 (except July 1).

Movies start at dusk. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets as well as snacks.

The schedule consists of:

June 10: “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey” (1993), Lowell Park

June 17: “Clifford the Big Red Dog” (2021), Jefferson Park

June 24: “A Goofy Movie” (1995), Greystone Park

July 8: “The Croods 2: A New Age” (2020), Wilson Park

July 15: “Luca” (2021), Silver Creek Park

July 22: “The Pink Panther” (2006), Mesa Marin Park

July 29: “Coco” (2017), The Park at River Walk

OUTLETS AT TEJON TO HOST CAR SHOW ON SEPT. 17

Start your engines: The Outlets at Tejon is hosting its second annual car show on Sept. 17.

Along with vehicles from various generation­s on display, the family-friendly event will offer music, delicious food options, an awards ceremony and shopping opportunit­ies.

“We are excited to provide a fun atmosphere where people of all ages from various communitie­s come together to enjoy cars,” Becca Bland, marketing director for the Outlets at Tejon, said in a news release. “Whether you’re a shopper or just passing through, we encourage you to stop by and enjoy great food, music, timeless cars and shopping!”

Show cars will check in at

9 a.m., followed by the food trucks at 10 a.m. before the event starts at 11 a.m.

Those who want to enter their vehicle in the show can register on Eventbrite or call 661-858-2155 for more informatio­n.

Entry fees start at $20 per vehicle with discounts available for owners or car clubs who enter five or more cars.

Admission is free for spectators, who will each receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes throughout the show. The drawing will be held at 2:30 p.m. and winners must be present to collect.

An awards ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. with winners named in the following categories: best by year/generation, best overall make/model, best work in progress, crowd favorite and overall event winner.

The car show will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 17 in the north parking lot of the outlets, 5701 Outlets at Tejon Parkway in Arvin.

IT’S QUEBRADITA TIME THIS FALL AT MECHANICS BANK THEATER

Quebradita Time is coming to Bakersfiel­d for a spectacula­r event on Sept. 4 at Mechanics Bank Theater.

For one night only, Banda Machos, Mi Banda El Mexicano, Banda Maguey and La Banda Zeta will all be on stage together.

Hailing from Jalisco, Mexico, Banda Machos has a career spanning 24-plus years with 24 albums along with multiple awards and nomination­s. This iconic band has performed internatio­nally and across the U.S., including stops at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Madison Square Garden in New York.

Mi Banda El Mexicano is becoming a viral music sensation with its mix of regional Mexican music as well as rock and jazz as well. They have earned 25 gold albums and many awards and nomination­s over a 47-year history.

Banda Maguey — “La estrella de los bailes” — originated in Villa Corona, also home to Banda Machos. Both bands have been called the two most successful exponents of the “technoband­a” sound.

During the 1990s, Banda Maguey dominated the radio waves with the debut of its album “Tumbando Caña,” which contained a number of hits including “El Alacran” a cover originally sung by La Sonora Matancera.

La Banda Zeta is a Mexican techno band originally from Nayarit, whose fame was fueled by the theme “La Niña Fresa,” a quebradita-style song that grew to popularity in the mid-90s in Mexico.

Doors open at 7 p.m., the show is at 8 p.m. Sept. 4 at the theater, 1001 Truxtun Ave.

Tickets, ranging from $60 to $95, are on sale at axs.com.

COMEDIAN SOMMORE TO PERFORM AT FOX ON SEPT. 24

Sommore, one of the “Queens of Comedy,” will headline a show on Sept. 24 at the Fox Theater.

Damon Williams will host the performanc­e that will also include featured guest TuRae Gordon.

The self-proclaimed “Chandelier” has appeared in films such as “Friday after Next,” “Soul Plane” and “Something New” and television series “The Parkers,” and “The Hughleys.” She has also been a featured guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The View” and “Politicall­y Incorrect with Bill Maher.”

Sommore has wrote, self-produced, and performed in her own one-woman comedy specials “The Queen Stands Alone” (2008) on Comedy Central and “Chandelier Status” (2013), “The Reign Continues” (2015) and “A Queen with No Spades” (2018) on Showtime. She also self-produced and hosted “All the Queens Men” (2018) on BET, featuring a quartet of her opening acts.
