Salas honors United Way as Nonprofit of the Year

Assemblyma­n Rudy Salas, D-Bakersfiel­d, honored the United Way of Kern as 2022 Nonprofit of the Year for his Assembly district.

The United Way of Kern has championed efforts to reduce homelessne­ss and food insecurity, and has supported free income tax assistance and early childhood literacy programs that have benefited countless families throughout the Central Valley, according to a news release from Salas’ office.

Founded in 1963, United Way of Kern has lead efforts to improve education, health and financial stability for families within Kern County. As a trusted nonprofit, they enable everyone to give and invest funds where they are needed most, and empower residents to volunteer and maximize their impact on the lives of others. Programs that are run by United Way of Kern include early childhood literacy programs, free COVID testing, mental health workshops and youth advocacy classes.

A Bakersfiel­d mother is hosting her first-ever maternal health fair Saturday to offer wide-ranging resources all in one place.

Bethany Ministries, located at 1200 Baker St., will host the event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tracy Dominguez, a local mother who lost her pregnant daughter Demi Dominguez after alleged medical negligence, sought to raise awareness for soon-to-be mothers and mothers about different potential health problems, as well as tips for motherhood.

Vendors include My Ultrasound Health Center, which will be offering ultrasound­s, as well as midwives, doulas, lactation specialist­s and representa­tives from the Bakersfiel­d Pregnancy Center, Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services and many more. Nurses will also be on hand to monitor blood pressure and blood sugar.

The Kern High School District is now providing a free breakfast to children in the community between the ages of 2 to 18 until July 15 at the following sites (The meals must be consumed on campus.):

■ East High School: 8:35 to 9:05 a.m.

■ Foothill High School: 8:30 to 9 a.m.

■ Golden Valley High School: 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.

■ Highland High School: 8:50 to

9:20 a.m.

■ Independen­ce High School: 8:35 to 9:05 a.m.

■ Kern Valley High School: 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.

■ Mira Monte High School: 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.

■ North High School: 8:35 to 9:05 a.m.

■ Nueva High School: 9:05 to 9:35 a.m.

■ Ridgeview High School: 8:05 to 8:35 a.m.

■ Shafter High School: 9:10 to 9:40 a.m.

■ South High School: 8:35 to 9:05 a.m.

■ Tierra Del Sol High School: 9:05 to 9:35 a.m.

■ Vista High School: 8:40 to 9:10 a.m.

■ Vista West High School: 8:50 to 9:20 a.m.

■ West High School: 8:40 to 9:10 a.m. Each year, the U.S. Department of Agricultur­e partners with local organizati­ons like Kern High School District to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. For more informatio­n about the Summer Meals program, visit kernhigh.org.

All Seated in a Barn is hosting a party 5 to 9 p.m. June 25 to celebrate its fourth anniversar­y.

The nonprofit organizati­ons, led by founder and director Tahlia Fischer, goes to auctions each month across the United States to rescue horses and donkeys from kill pens, which ship animals to Mexico and Canada for human consumptio­n, according to an All Seated news release.

After the animals Fischer purchases go through quarantine and critical veterinary care, they are transporte­d to Bakersfiel­d where they get rehabilita­ted and adopted out into loving homes. All Seated in a Barn also accepts many local animal surrenders.

The event will feature live music, food, drinks and a raffle at 30764 Imperial St. in Shafter. Admission is $5, with VIP tables available for prepurchas­e.
