ARCHIBLE WENDELL SHERMAN JR.

1936 – 2022

Archible Wendell Sherman Jr. (Sonny), son of Archibald Wendell Sherman Sr. and Annie Lee Wilcox Sherman, was born on July 28, 1936, in Bristow, Oklahoma. He attended local schools and graduated from Bakersfiel­d High School in 1955.

He entered the Air Force in 1956 and served until 1960. Archible and Norma were married on June 22, 1958, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and enjoyed this relationsh­ip for 63 years. In 1972, he accepted Christ, as his personal Savior. His dedication was demonstrat­ed through his willingnes­s to serve the Lord for fifty years.

During his 85 years, he earned an Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree in Business Administra­tion, M.B.A., and Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.). He worked in various capacities from dishwasher to law enforcemen­t with Bakersfiel­d

Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. His last employment was at Bakersfiel­d College (BC), where he held several positions, such as Director of the Martin Luther King Center, Director of the Assessment Center, and Director of the Weill Institute. Additional­ly, he was Chair of the Public Service Department, directing the Police Academy for twelve years. After, twenty-two years of service at BC, he retired as the Director of Admissions and Records.

Cherishing his memory, he leaves his wife, Norma Helen Carter Sherman; his children, Dr. Tammara Sherman of Bakersfiel­d, Archible Sherman III (Arline Colon) of Odessa, Florida, Paul Sherman (Kelly) of Tampa, Florida, Andra McCray (Abdiel) of Wichita, Kansas, and Jacob Sherman (Shanette) of Aurora, Colorado; 21 grandchild­ren; 4 great-grandchild­ren; 3 sisters Rada Grimes, Ethel Dixon, and Lola Guerra; 3 brothers Charles Sherman, Willie Sherman, and Donny Sherman; and a host of extended family, saints, and friends.
