Carolyn Margaret Powell was called to heaven on Monday, May 23, 2022 in Los Angeles, California, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 85 years old. She has been reunited with her dear husband William Powell Sr., and a myriad of family and friends.

“Carol” was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to the union of Emmanuel Mathieu and Marie Tureaud on October 11, 1936. After graduating from Clark High School, she married her husband, William Powell Sr., for 61 years.

Carol was an elegant and classy lady who was a devout member of the Roman Catholic faith. She worked at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana as a secretary for the Natural and Social Science Department, at Celestine's Café in Greenville, Mississippi as a cashier and for Tanne Arden Department Store as a bookkeeper, in Los Angeles, California. In 1969, she and her family moved to Bakersfield where she was well known as a gracious landlord to her tenants and for her fine jewelry making business, “Powell's Jewelry.”

Carol was a loving wife, a devoted mother and loyal friend, always willing to generously help others. She passionately carried on the traditions of Creole cuisine by cooking her favorites like gumbo, red beans and rice, crawfish boils and Po'boy sandwiches. She was also famous for her delicious pecan brownies and lemon cake. She enjoyed gardening, fishing on her family boat, painting, singing and dancing to her music on Alexa. She especially enjoyed playing the slot machines at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and her trips to Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, Africa and Hawaii.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents Emmanuel Mathieu and Marie Tureaud; her husband, William Powell Sr.; her sister Sylvia; and her half brothers Emmanuel and Ricky.
