July 4 fireworks set for The Park at River Walk
The sky will be illuminated as the city of Bakersfield’s Independence Day celebration and fireworks show will be held at The Park at River Walk on Monday, July 4.
After a two-year absence, live entertainment will return to the stage of the Dignity Health Amphitheatre beginning at 6 p.m., with music by Foster Campbell starting at 6:30 p.m.
Zambelli Fireworks will produce the fireworks show, which this year is sponsored by the Robert and Kari Grimm Family Foundation and Mechanics Bank, according to a city news release.
The fireworks show is scheduled to start at 9:15 p.m., with musical accompaniment provided by KUZZ.
The celebration will also be streamed live on 23ABC’s digital platforms: TurnTo23.com, as well as Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV.
Food vendors expected to have booths at the park include Carnie Kettle Corn, El Churro Loco, Fuego’s Tacos, Get Twisted, Itoyz, KV Southern Style BBQ and Poppi’s Pastami & More.
Tickets are on sale for “mainline” American Airlines flights from Meadows Field Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the county announced.
American Airlines will upsize its morning and mid-day flights from a CRJ 900 to an Air Bus 319 beginning Oct. 6, providing an additional 50 seats per flight, first class seating, Wi-Fi and AC power.
“We’re proud of this expansion because it shows Meadows Field Airport is growing as more travelers utilize our services,” a county news release said.
The city of Bakersfield is developing a climate action plan and is asking for the public’s help to “better understand the challenges and opportunities our community is facing when it comes to climate change,” according to a city memo.
The Development Services Department will host a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at City Hall South, 1501 Truxtun Ave.

A nighttime closure for the Ming Avenue on-ramp to northbound Highway 99 has been scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., for drainage installation, the city announced.
Motorists can enter northbound Highway 99 from the California Avenue on-ramp.
Construction schedules may change without notice due to unforeseen circumstances, the Thomas Roads Improvement Program notes.
Real Road will be flagged for one-way directional traffic between Stockdale Highway and Elcia Drive from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the installation of falsework, the city of Bakersfield announced.
A single lane will remain open with flaggers to direct traffic. Construction schedules can change due to unforeseen circumstances, the city noted.
The Kern County Public Works Department will install stop signs for east and westbound traffic at Terrace Way and Hughes Lane on Thursday, making the intersection an all-way stop.
The California Highway Patrol will be in the area enforcing the new stop signs.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County is offering “grab and go” meals to children at locations in Arvin, Bakersfield and Lamont this summer.
Lunch and breakfast for the following day will be served to children ages 18 and younger. The children do not have to be present to receive a meal and there is no eligibility documentation, according to a club news release.
The following sites offer meals, Monday through Friday:
• Armstrong Youth Center, 801 Niles St. in Bakersfield. Meals served 3 to 5 p.m. now through Aug. 16.
• Arvin Community Center, 800 Walnut Drive in Arvin. Meals served 2 to 4 p.m. now through Aug. 2.

26.
• David Nelson Pocket Park, 1511 Niles St. in Bakersfield. Meals served from 2 to 4 p.m., now through Aug. 16.
• Lamont Club, 8301 Segrue Road in Lamont. Meals served from 3 to 4 p.m., now through July 26.
• Rexland Acres Park, 315 East Fairview Road in Bakersfield. Meals served from 3 to 4 p.m., now through Aug. 16.
• Riverview Southern Baptist Church, 410 Beardsley Ave. in Bakersfield. Meals served from 3 to 4 p.m., now through Aug. 16.
