BPD: Man with a hatchet attacks woman in shower

-

A man has been arrested by the Bakersfield Police Department on suspicion that he wielded a hatchet to assault a woman while she was showering.

Kyler Kuehl, 59, entered a stranger’s bathroom Friday, police said, where a woman was showering in a residence on the 3200 block of Park Bend Court. The ensuing struggle between the victim and Kuehl stopped after another man intervened, according to a BPD news release.

The woman suffered a non-life threatening injury, police said. Kuehl was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape during a burglary offense, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and DUI in connection with a head-on crash Friday on Highway 58, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ayana Council, 27, of San Mateo was driving a 2016 Nissan Sentra west on Highway 58 at about 8:15 Friday when she made an “unsafe turn” that caused her vehicle to leave the roadway, according to a CHP news release.

Council lost control of the Nissan and crashed head-on into the vehicle of a 54-year-old San Ramon woman driving eastbound, the news release stated. The collision caused the 54-yearold’s Chevrolet to overturn several times, killing her at the scene, CHP said.

The identity of the victim was withheld pending identification from the Kern County coroner’s office.

Officers said Council was driving under the influence. She was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and other related offenses.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can call the Bakersfield CHP office at 661-396-6600.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a Bakersfield motorcyclist who died after crashing into a vehicle.

Garry Donn Poindexter, 41, was pronounced deceased Friday afternoon at the Kern Medical Emergency Room after crashing at the intersection of River Boulevard and Goodman Street.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stabbing in Taft that has been attributed to the victim’s son.

Deputies were dispatched at 9:30 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of Wilson Avenue, according to KCSO. The father, a Taft man, was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, deputies said.

The son, who is also from Taft, fled the scene, deputies added.

A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and 26 vehicles were impounded during a DUI checkpoint Friday, according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release.

The BPD screened 1,387 vehicles during the DUI and driver’s license checkpoint between 6:30 p.m. Friday and 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 4600 block of Stockdale Highway.

Sixteen drivers were cited on suspicion of driving while unlicensed. Thirteen drivers were cited in connection with driving with a suspended license.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Residents are encouraged to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
