Padres sweep Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Joe Musgrove had a season-high 11 strikeouts, Manny Machado drove in three runs and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep.

Luis Campusano and Jake Cronenwort­h added RBIs for San Diego, which has won five of its last six games and five straight against San Francisco.

Musgrove (9-6) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander earned his first win since June 16, snapping a sixgame losing streak.

All-Star closer Josh Hader overcame his recent struggles to secure his 30th save in 33 opportunit­ies and his first with the Padres.

NATIONALS 5, ATHLETICS 1

WASHINGTON — Aníbal Sánchez earned his first victory in nearly two years, Luke Voit hit a two-run home run and Washington beat Oakland.

Dermis Garcia homered for the second straight game for Oakland, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Athletics are an AL-worst 49-82 and assured of their first losing season since 2017.

Sánchez (1-5) worked a season-high seven innings, allowing three hits and one run in earning his first victory since Sept. 26, 2020. The 38-year-old did not pitch last year and did not debut this season until July 14 because of a cervical nerve impingemen­t. The right-hander had not gone more than 5 2/3 innings in his previous eight starts for Washington, which had dropped six of eight. The Nationals have the worst record in the majors at 44-86.

It was the second time in three games a Nationals starting pitcher earned a

victory. Washington had gone a major-league record 43 games without a starter earning a victory before Patrick Corbin defeated Cincinnati on Sunday.

ATLANTA — Kyle Wright pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his major league-leading 17th victory, Austin Riley and Ronald Acuña Jr. homered, and Atlanta beat Colorado.

MILWAUKEE — Keston Hiura and Luis Urías each hit an RBI single during Milwaukee’s four-run seventh inning.

CHICAGO — Lance Lynn pitched four-hit ball through seven innings, Elvis Andrus hit a tiebreakin­g home run in the fifth and the White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak.

MINNEAPOLI­S — Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, J.D. Martinez also homered to back Michael Wacha’s strong start for Boston and the Red Sox held on.

DETROIT — Abraham Toro hit a go-ahead, tworun homer in the seventh inning and Seattle beat won its fifth win in six

games.

CLEVELAND — Gunnar Henderson homered in his major league debut, losing his batting helmet after connecting on a drive that traveled an estimated 429 feet, and Baltimore beat the Guardians.

Henderson, called up from Triple-A Norfolk earlier in the day, homered to lead off the fourth inning against Triston McKenzie. The game’s No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America singled in the ninth and went 2-for-4.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Jose Altuve drove in two runs and scored two more for AL-best Houston in a win over the Rangers and their All-Star starter Martín Pérez.

TORONTO — Franmil Reyes homered, Nico Hoerner drove in a pair of runs and Chicago beat the Blue Jays to avoid a threegame sweep.

MIAMI — Manuel Margot singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and prevented a run by tracking down a flyball to deep center in the bottom half, leading Tampa Bay past the Marlins.
