BPD: Man who fired at police, community member arrested

-

A man who fired at Bakersfield Police Department officers on Baker Street on Sunday was arrested early Monday morning.

Steven Jimenez, 32, is accused of shooting at BPD officers and a community member who was on a ride-along in the 200 block of Baker Street while officers were investigating a Shot Spotter detection of gunfire. Police officers fired back. A chase began to apprehend Jimenez — who also fired at officers during the chase — but he evaded officers, BPD wrote in a news release.

Officers later tried to arrest Jimenez around 3:21 a.m. Monday in the area of the 1900 block of Union Avenue. Jimenez “produced” a handgun and one officer fired at him, but no one was struck during this shooting or the previous one, a BPD news release said.

Another chase began and Jimenez was apprehended with help from a K-9. He was taken to a hospital after getting minor injuries from the K-9, police said.

Body-worn camera footage will be released, a news release said.

A 15-year-old boy died Saturday after a man driving a reportedly stolen car ran a stop

sign and drove into another car in east Bakersfield, the California Highway Patrol said Monday in a news release.

Timothy Leal, 18, was driving a stolen Kia Optima going west on Irene Street and didn’t stop at a stop sign on Alta Vista Drive, the CHP wrote. He drove directly into Donald Justus Olsson’s car, a news release said.

Olsson, 80, didn’t have time to react and his car rolled over while coming to rest against a house.

The 15-year-old boy, a passenger in Leal’s car, died at the scene, CHP wrote. Olsson had minor injuries and was taken to Kern Medical.

The boy’s identity has not been released.

Leal showed “signs and symptoms of intoxication” and was arrested for numerous charges, CHP wrote. Leal wasn’t in custody as of 10:22 a.m. Monday but suffered major injuries, the CHP added.

Kern County sheriff’s deputies found two dead men Sunday with trauma to their

upper bodies when they went to Lake Isabella to check on two people unseen for several days, according to a news release issued Monday.

Homicide detectives went to the 3000 block of Erskine Creek Road to investigate. They found a weapon at the scene, and they are not searching for any suspects, the news release said.

Asked whether this incident could be called a murder-suicide, KCSO spokeswoman Lori Meza said the coroner will make that determination. Right now, it’s a homicide investigation, she added.

Anyone with information about this incident may call the KCSO at 661-861-3110 or Secret Witness at 661-322-4040.

Police are searching for a missing 15-yearold girl last seen Sunday who is considered

at risk because she has never run away before.

Alexandra Chavez was last seen in the 4200 block of Parker Avenue wearing a burgundy sweatshirt, blue pants and black Converse shoes.

She’s a Hispanic girl about 5 feet tall and weighs 120 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, the Bakersfield Police Department said in a news release.

Anyone with information about Chavez should call the BPD at 661-327-7111.
