Real Road reduced to one lane for construction

-

The city of Bakersfield announced Monday that Real Road between Stockdale Highway and Elica Drive will be reduced to one lane today through Friday.

Workers will be removing falsework, and some will be directing traffic on the single lane. It’s estimated to last from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Construction schedules may change without notice because of unforeseen circumstances, the city of Bakersfield wrote in a news release.

The California Department of Transportation is hosting two events Saturday for residents to dispose of their tires for free.

The Shafter-Wasco Public Works office, 17621 Scofield Ave., and a waste collection site in Taft, 13351 Elf Hills Road, will collect rubber from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until their capacity is reached.

Caltrans also provided tips for residents looking to drop off their tires:

■ Tires must have rims removed.

■ Commercial waste is not accepted, only residential trash.

■ Earthmover or oversized tires are not accepted.

■ To prevent litter, loads must be tarped for delivery.

State laws dictate to only bring nine waste tires at once.

Highway 58 at Chester Avenue will be closed today to Thursday when workers are installing signs.

California Highway Patrol officers will watch over the work happening from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

A detour for motorists driving west to catch the Highway 99 north exit will direct drivers to exit Chester Avenue and turn right. Then, turn left on Brundage Lane, right on Oak Street and left onto California Avenue. Turning right will lead to the Highway 99 exit.

To take the Highway 99 south exit, drivers will be redirected to exit at Chester Avenue. Turn right on Chester Avenue, left on Brundage Lane, left on Wible Road and right on Ming Avenue. Turn left to take the Highway 99 south exit.

The Central California Animal Disaster Team will host a volunteer recruitment meeting in March in coordination with the Bakersfield SPCA to learn about animal evacuation and emergency sheltering.

Attendees must register in advance for the meeting to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 11 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 12 at Bakersfield SPCA, 3000 Gibson St.
