Bakersfield – Ruby Young – Wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

Born on December 26, 1935 in Madera, California. She loved her mother Low Shee (deceased), father Gong Tim (deceased), and siblings. She always said that there's nothing more important than family. In 1956, she married William (Bill) Young, and then moved to Bakersfield. She worked in the family grocery business. She treated the employees like family, and watched them grow up from their teenage years to eventually having families of their own. The customers knew her well and some still to this day have remained loyal and faithful friends to her.

She had a life-long passion for cooking, enjoying a meal with family and friends, fresh seafood cooked just right, and cherishing the food photography recipes in cookbooks and magazines. With a love and passion for food she honed her culinary skills to create decedent dishes styled just like the ones pictured.

She loved her soup piping hot otherwise she was not happy. One of her favorite things she enjoyed was treating family and friends to dinner at one of her favorite restaurants. Her recipe for love always included a healthy portion of family, a side of friends, and a splash of good conversation.

In addition to food, she loved to collect dolls, coins, and cookbooks. She would always get excited when she found something new to add to her collections. There was always a story and history behind each item in her collections.

At Christmas, she would go to the bank and get crisp new bills. With these she would create colorful, beautiful, and extraordinary paper corsages. Patiently wrap each bill with colored cellophane paper bundled and bound by colorful pipe cleaners. In the end to create treasured handmade gifts for Christmas.

She was most proud of her family and their accomplishments. Since she was not able to attend college, she valued education and often strived for her children to be better educated than her. Among her proudest moments were her children's graduation from college.

With her gentle nature she blessed others with her kindness, goodness, and generosity. Her heart filled with joy as she cared for all of her five grandchildren and watched them grow into wonderful and beautiful adults.

When Ruby left for Heaven to enjoy a meal with family and friends in the sky, she left behind her daughter Susan Young (husband Warren) and granddaughter Lauren; daughter Lisa Miller (husband Mark) and granddaughter Christine Wong and grandson Tyler Wong; son Gary Young, and son Steven Young (wife Liane) and grandson Ryan Young and granddaughter Emily Young.

A special thank you to the teams of Hoffmann Hospice and Ivy Park at Seven Oaks for the excellent and compassionate care they provided.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 11:00 am located at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
