Charges dismissed for detentions deputy accused of ingesting meth, bringing drugs to jail

A Kern County sheriff’s deputy had drug intoxicati­on and possession charges against her dismissed Friday after successful­ly completing classes for drug abuse, according to her attorney.

Defense attorney Kyle J. Humphrey filed in court proof that Elizabeth Fernandez — a county employee for 21 years — completed 20 Narcotics Anonymous meetings. The case’s dismissal terms included accruing no more law violations since her arrest in June, according to Kern County Superior Court Judge Chad A. Louie.

Fernandez was intoxicate­d by meth and brought the drugs into jails where she worked as a detentions deputy, according to The California­n’s previous reporting. Drug parapherna­lia was found with her as well, previous reporting said.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department arrested a woman on suspicion of killing a man Friday in

northeast Bakersfiel­d.

Police went to the 7000 block of Auburn Street at 2 a.m. and found a shooting victim. Valeria Galvez, 36, of Bakersfiel­d was detained by officers who also found a gun, according to a news release.

Police aren’t looking for any more suspects. Residents who have informatio­n to help police in their investigat­ion are asked to call 661-327-7111.

An 87-year-old man who has dementia is missing, according to police.

Ignacio Mendez was last seen Thursday wearing a blue collared shirt with a black sweater, blue jeans and blue Crocs-style shoes, according to a news release from the Bakersfiel­d Police Department. He’s 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 120 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.

Mendez, a Hispanic man, was spotted last in the area of South Owens Street and East Brundage Lane around 4:30 p.m.

Anyone with informatio­n about Mendez’s location is asked to call the BPD at 661-327-7111.

Help is requested to find a 14-year-old runaway last seen Thursday who is considered at

risk by police because she’s uttered suicidal statements, according to a news release from the Bakersfiel­d Police Department.

Karla E. Ramirez-Solis, who has black hair and brown eyes, was last see in the 200 block of Northup Street. She is a Hispanic girl, 5 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 110 pounds.

Anyone who may have spotted the 14-year-old may call the BPD at 661-327-7111.
