Ukraine is first domino at risk

-

I was pleased to read Steve Bacon’s Community Voices article. It was concise, well-written, and very accurate in discussing European history and the dangerous situation facing the world as a result of Putin’s aggression in Ukraine. His is the first article that I have seen that very simply and accurately points out the similarity of Russia’s current behavior and Hitler’s actions leading up to World War II.

You don’t have to be an historical scholar to see what’s happening. The similarities are obvious.

I’ve repeatedly tried to point this out to my conservative/isolationist friends who are focused on the ridiculous “open border” situation and the current administration’s focus on pandering to the extreme left wing of American politics.

There’s plenty to criticize in the current administration’s ridiculous “progressive” focus, but we need to find the money and the will to address both unbridled immigration, the foolish social extremes pushed by the left, and the extremely serious threat to world peace presented by Putin’s Russia.

My father, uncle and their generation had to fight a war worldwide to protect freedom and our way of life. Many died but the world was saved from brutality and a bleak future.

This is now a nuclear age with the potential to destroy our world. We don’t want to have our sons and grandchildren have to contend with the worldwide disaster that will ensue if we don’t continue to aid Ukraine in resisting unbridled aggression by a Russia in thrall to a reactionary dictator like Putin who has stated that he wants to reconstitute the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

Ukraine is the first domino at risk. Any student of history knows that Moldova and the Baltics are next.

The current administration has made many errors in many domains but they have been correct in supporting Ukraine. They should have done more. In the long run it is a cheap investment in securing a more secure future for our world.

We need to help Ukraine as much as humanly possible. This should be a bipartisan issue. — Dennis Slater, Bakersfield
