The Hub of Bakersfield seeks applicants for Innovation Lab

-

Do you want to make Bakersfield a nicer place to live and thrive? Then The Hub of Bakersfield wants you.

The nonprofit is now accepting applications for the fifth class of its Innovation Lab, a program that helps cultivate ideas and projects to develop the city’s arts and dining scene, community involvement and more.

“We call participants ‘Innovators’ because they are coming up with incredible ways for all of us to enjoy downtown Bakersfield just a little more,” Jorge Barrientos, facilitator for the program, said in a news release. “The ‘Innovators’ come away from the program appreciating Bakersfield more, while becoming lifelong ambassadors for the advancement of our city.”

More than 50 residents have graduated from the program that has helped create public murals and art pieces and concerts and events for The Hub’s Second Saturday. It has also fostered the campaign to save Old Town Kern’s Sumner Station, and introduced a restaurant week to downtown Bakersfield.

For the latest class, participants in the four-month program will meet and interview city stakeholders and community activists, work together in a team environment, and learn to execute projects “that enhance Bakersfield’s urban core.” The program also includes a field trip somewhere outside of Bakersfield to learn from an area or initiative that is “doing it right” or “doing it different.” (One trip took the class to the Smorgasburg openair food market in L.A.)

The Hub is looking for applicants who are mature, forward-thinking, positive and responsible. They should enjoy making new friends as well as professional connections, have an interest in learning about what makes things work the way they do, and want to improve the way of life for themselves and those in the community.

This program is suited for both those new to Bakersfield as well as longtime residents.

The cost is $500, which covers class materials, meals and “life-enhancing experiences.” Scholarship opportunities may be available. (Organizations that would like to sponsor an innovator can text Heather Laganelli at 203-687-0468 for more details.)

Participants must commit to meet with their fellow Bakersfield innovators twice a month for four months.

Applications are due by Jan. 19, with interviews scheduled shortly after. Those selected will begin the program Feb. 5 and complete it on May 20.
