Case of 3 charged in carjacking of Dodge Hellcat pushed to March
A man charged in the shooting death of a woman after stealing her beloved car appeared in court Thursday for his preliminary hearing along with two others charged with carjacking, but it was pushed to March.
David Tyrone Thompson, 19, of Bellflower, is charged with first-degree murder, carjacking and taking a vehicle without consent.
His co-defendants, Giovanni Garciaviscarra, 20, of Long Beach, and Joseph Bush IV, 24, of Anaheim, are both charged with carjacking, taking a vehicle without consent and conspiracy to commit a crime.
The case was started, delayed and restarted Thursday morning as the team of lawyers representing the three men waited for all attorneys to be present for the case since some were simultaneously attending to other cases.
The courtroom packed with family members of the three defendants waited patiently as lawyers bobbed in and out of the room.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the three men were originally arrested June 21 with a fourth person, who was not charged.
Victoria Anne Maria Hampton, 61, of Bakersfield was killed after her Dodge Hellcat was stolen, according to the BPD.
Hampton had an Apple AirTag in her car and tracked its location. While she was on the phone with her friend, Hampton confronted the men and her friend heard gunshots, according to BPD.
According to the Kern County Coroner’s Office, Hampton was shot around 6:30 p.m. March 19 on Ginger Road and died April 1.
Thompson remains in custody and is being held with no bond, while Garciaviscarra and Bush are not in custody and have a $150,000 bond and $200,000 bond, respectively.
The next court appearance for the three will be a pre-preliminary hearing and a preliminary hearing on March 20 and 21.
