Thomas Joseph Muir

MIAMI - Muir, Thomas J., II of Palisades Park and Miami Beach, Florida, formerly of North Bergen, entered into eternal rest on December 21, 2023. He was born and raised in Hoboken to Margaret, nee Burns, and Thomas J. Muir. He was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School in Union City and Panzer College, now Montclair University, and received his MA degree from Seton Hall University. After serving in the United States Army, he was a successful Teacher, Track Coach and Principal in the North Bergen school district. He was later employed at St. Peter’s University as an Adjunct Professor in the Education Department.

Tom was a long-time outstandin­g Track and Field coach at North Bergen High School winning 14 Hudson County and five Sectional State Championsh­ips during his 15 years at the helm. His teams brought home many gold medals from the Penn Relays as well as the New York Relays. Tom coached young men to become well rounded and active contributo­rs to sportsmans­hip in athletics, setting the stage for becoming influentia­l members of society. He was very proud of his team members, and with his ongoing profession­al leadership, continued many life-long friendship­s, never tiring to hear from those he had coached and sharing in their many accomplish­ments.

Tom was a past President of the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Approved Basketball Officials, Board #33, and was recognized for his 50 years of active Basketball Officiatin­g, where he enjoyed a rewarding career refereeing many championsh­ip games on both college and high school levels. Tom was a recipient of the Dominick Cuccinelli Distinguis­hed Service Award and the Frank C. Corrigan Memorial Award during his career.

He was inducted into the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame, the Panzer College Hall of Fame, the Hudson County Track Coaches Hall of Fame, and received the NJSIAA Sports Award. He was recognized by the Jersey Journal as the Track Coach of the Decade and received the Outstandin­g Citizen Award from the Township of North Bergen. He was a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Garden State Board of Officials and Region 19 JUCO, as well as the Northeast Chapter 2 Volleyball Officials Associatio­n.

Tom was married to his college sweetheart, Connie, who predecease­d him. He leaves two loving sons, Thomas III, and his wife Christine; Timothy, and his wife Virginia; and was predecease­d by his youngest son, Michael. He was a devoted grandfathe­r to Tommy D. Muir, Daniel Muir, and Madison Muir. He is also survived by his brother Peter, sister-in-law Marilyn and brotherin-law Newt Tiffany. He leaves his nieces, nephews, cousins, and members of his extended family as well as many close friends. The family will receive relatives and friends at Van Orsdel Funeral & Cremation Services 3333 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida on Thursday, December 28th from 1-2 pm.

The Family of Thomas Muir requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his memory.
