Orioles overpower Mariners
Two teams that rely heavily on the home run engaged in a long-ball duel at Camden Yards in Baltimore that had the fans in the bleachers running for cover.
In the end, Chris Davis’s major league-leading 40th homer and a grand slam by Nate McLouth trumped four home runs by Seattle, and the Orioles held on for an 11-8 victory Friday night.
‘‘It was the kind of a game where you felt like you had to outscore them,’’ McLouth said. ‘‘The ball was flying, and they’re a really good hitting team.’’
Seattle and Baltimore started the game ranked 1-2 in percentage of runs scored via the home run.
Davis and Ryan Flaherty hit solo shots prior to McLouth’s first career slam. Seattle got a two-run homer from Michael Saunders and solo drives from Kendrys Morales, Michael Morse, and Humberto Quintero.
On Thursday night, the Mariners allowed six runs in the bottom of the ninth in an 8-7 loss to the Red Sox. Acting manager Robby Thompson addressed his young team before this game to make sure there would be no carry-over.
‘‘It’s over and done with,’’ Thompson said. ‘‘I want to make sure we forget about it . . . and move forward.’’ Mets 4, Royals 2— Eric Young Jr. homered with two outs in the 11th inning for his first career game-ending hit and New York beat Kansas City to snap the Royals’ winning streak at nine.
David Wright left in the 10th inning with an apparent hamstring injury after legging out an infield hit. Wright hit a tworun homer in the first, tying Mike Piazza for second place on the franchise’s home run list with 220. Giants 4, Rays 1 — Madison Bumgarner struck out 11 in seven innings and Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homer as San Francisco beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay has lost two in a row after going 21-5 in July. Padres 7, Yankees 2 — Will Venable, Jedd Gyorko, and Logan Forsythe homered to lead host San Diego to victory. Angels 7, Blue Jays 5 — Kole Calhoun had a two-run home run, and J.B. Shuck scored twice and robbed Jose Bautista of a homer as host Los Angeles came back to beat Toronto. Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 — Nick Punto drove in two runs to help Los Angeles matched an 89-year-old club record with its 12th straight road victory, beating Chicago. Marlins 10, Indians 0 — Jose Fernandez fanned 14 batters, the most by anNL pitcher this season, over eight innings as host Miami routed Cleveland, snapping the Indians’ eight-game win streak. Tigers 2, White Sox 1 — Doug Fister pitched eight impressive innings, Austin Jackson homered, and Jose Iglesias drove in a run in his Detroit debut to lead the Tigers past visiting Chicago. Twins 4, Astros 3 — Brian Dozier played the role of hero for host Minnesota, tying the game with an RBI single in the ninth and winning it with an RBI single with two outs in the 13th. Rangers 8, Athletics 3— Nelson Cruz hit a home run, A.J. Pierzynski drove in three runs, and Texas won in Oakland, Calif. Rockies 4, Pirates 2 — Jhoulys Chacin allowed one run over eight innings and Colorado snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over host Pittsburgh. Chacin has won seven of his past nine decisions. Braves 6, Phillies 4 — Brian McCann and Chris Johnson hit consecutive homers in a five-run fifth inning to lead visiting Atlanta to its eighth straight win. Cardinals 13, Reds 3 — David Freese set the tone with a three-run double in the first inning, and Daniel Descalso hit two homers for his first career multihomer game as St. Louis pulled away in Cincinnati.
