White Sox continue on selling spree

-

The Dodgers, who have made pitching a priority in advance of the trade deadline, acquired Lance

Lynn and Joe Kelly in a trade with the White Sox. The National League West leaders will send outfielder Trayce Thompson, pitcher Nick Nastrini, and reliever Jordan Leasure to the White Sox, who beat the Guardians, 3-0, in Chicago on Friday.

Lynn has been mostly underwhelming this season. The 36-year-old righthander is 6-9 with a 6.18 ERA and leads the American League in earned runs (79) and home runs allowed (28). But Lynn has 139 strikeouts in 115 innings (10.9 per nine innings).

Lynn, a two-time All-Star who has finished in the top six in Cy Young voting three times, won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011, his debut season.

Kelly returns for his second stint with the Dodgers. The hard-throwing righthanded reliever recently returned from the injured list for elbow inflammation. Kelly, who won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2018, pitched for the Dodgers from 2019-21, winning the World Series in 2020. He had a 3.59 ERA in 105 innings during that span.

The White Sox weren’t done dealing, sending reliever Kendall Graveman to the Astros in exchange for minor league catcher Korey Lee. The righthanded Graveman returns to Houston after he spent the last two months of the 2021 season with the Astros.

Graveman, 32, is 3-4 with eight saves and a 3.48 ERA in 45 appearances this season. In his first stint with the Astros after a trade from Seattle, he had a 3.13 ERA in 23 appearances. Lee was a first-round pick by the Astros in 2019.

Yankees get Judge back

The Yankees reinstated Aaron Judge from the injured list before they opened a weekend road series against the Orioles.

Judge was 0 for 1 with three walks in his first four plate appearances while batting second in a game extended by a lengthy rain delay.

Judge had been out since tearing a ligament in his right big toe June 3 when he crashed into the right-field fence while making a catch at Dodger Stadium.

New York is 19-23 since Judge got hurt. The Yankees were 30-19 with Judge, who also missed 10 games earlier this season with a right hip strain.

Judge is batting .291 with 19 homers and 40 RBIs. To make room for him, the Yankees optioned infielder Oswald Peraza to Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Ohtani homers, then leaves

Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 39th home run for the Angels, but the Blue Jays slugged three solo homers and beat Los Angeles, 4-1, in Toronto. Ohtani was replaced by Michael Stefanic when his at-bat came up with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

Angels manager Phil Nevin said after the game Ohtani left because of leg cramps. A day earlier, Ohtani left the second game of a doubleheader at Detroit, also because of cramps. Stefanic struck out looking as Toronto ended the Angels’ four-game winning streak.

Lucas Giolito (6-7) made his first start for the Angels since being acquired from the White Sox earlier in the week. He allowed three runs and six hits in 5‚ innings, walking one and striking out five.

Rays top Astros in ninth

Brandon Lowe hit a three-run homer early and José Siri doubled and scored the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning in the Rays’ 4-3 victory over the Astros in Houston.

The game was tied entering the ninth when Siri, who played for Houston last season, doubled to left field off Ryan Pressly (3-3) and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Christian Bethancourt. The Rays took a 4-3 lead when Siri scored on a sacrifice fly by Yandy Díaz.

The victory was just Tampa Bay’s third in 11 games and the team’s sixth this month.

Witt hits walkoff grand slam

Bobby Witt Jr.’s grand slam in the 10th inning gave the Royals an 8-5 victory over the Twins in Kansas City, Mo. Witt finished 4 for 5 with six RBIs, falling a triple short of the cycle and pulling out the game after the Royals blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth.

Brady Singer struck out a season-high 10 in five innings for the Royals, who needed their 13th comeback win of the season after Jorge Polanco’s two-run double with two outs in the ninth tied it at 4-all.

Reds give extension to Bell

Manager David Bell, who has presided over a successful turnaround in Cincinnati, received a three-year contract extension from the Reds through the 2026 season.

The Reds are 56-48 and 1½ games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. They’re trying to become the first team in major league history to win a division title after losing at least 100 games the previous season. They were 62-100 last year, tying Pittsburgh for last in the division.

Mikolas banned five games

Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for intentionally throwing at Ian Happ of the Cubs. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was suspended for one game and fined as a result of Mikolas’s actions Thursday night. Mikolas appealed his penalties, while Marmol served his suspension Friday night.
