A worker at Market Basket in Revere was killed Sunday night while crossing Route 60 on her way to catch a bus after her shift had ended, according to law enforcement and a store manager.

Sofia Isabel Mejia Zambrano,28, of East Boston was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred around 8:40 p.m. in the area of 169 Squire Road, which is on a three-lane stretch of Route 60, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

The driver remained at the scene and no charges have been filed, officials said Friday. The crash is still under investigation.

“We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Ms. Zambrano’s husband and family,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement identifying her as the victim Friday night. “To lose a loved one, especially at such a young age, is a terrible tragedy.”

Joe Angelari, the manager of the Market Basket, said Zambrano had worked at the store since January. She had finished her shift as a cashier Sunday night and was walking about a mile to a bus stop when she was hit, he said.

Angelari said the woman had moved from Ecuador to East Boston by herself at the end of 2023. Her entire family, including her husband, live in Ecuador.

“She hadn’t even been in this country for six months,” Angelari said. “It’s a tragic event, a terrible thing.”

The Market Basket company said in a statement it is “heartbroken” over Zambrano’s death.

“She was a wonderful member of the Revere store team,” the statement said. “While she only worked with us for a few months, she made many friends. The suddenness of her death leaves her colleagues with an enormous sense of loss.”

A local organization is holding a vigil for Zambrano on Saturday.
