Canada tops US in OT for women’s hockey title

Danielle Serdachny converted a rebound in front 5:16 into overtime for a power-play goal and Canada beat the United States, 6-5, on Sunday in the women’s world hockey championsh­ip gold-medal game at Utica, N.Y. Serdachny’s goal came with two seconds left on a too-many-players penalty to give Canada its tournament-leading 13th gold medal. Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice for the victors, Julia Gosling also scored, and Erin Ambrose and Emily Clark had shots bank into the net off US defenseman Caroline Harvey. Ann-Renee Desbiens (19 saves) stopped Harvey’s wraparound attempt 2:40 into the overtime. Harvey and Laila Edwards had a goal and assist for the Americans. Hilary Knight, Megan Keller, and Alex Carpenter also scored . . . Petra Nieminen scored the decisive shootout goal, and Finland beat the Czech Republic, 3-2, to win its 14th bronze medal.

Patriots host McCarthy

The Patriots hosted Michigan quarterbac­k J.J. McCarthy for dinner Sunday night, and will chat with the signal-caller Monday. McCarthy’s visit comes on the heels of similar visits involving LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye earlier in the predraft process. McCarthy completed 72 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards to go along with 22 touchdowns and four intercepti­ons for the national champions this past season. The 6-foot-2-inch, 219-pounder previously met with the Patriots at the combine. McCarthy, Maye, and Daniels all figure to be in mix for the third overall pick, which the Patriots have in the draft on April 25.

NASCAR Elliott ends drought

Chase Elliott pulled ahead and cleared Ross Chastain on the first lap after the second restart in overtime at Texas Motor Speedway, ending a 42-race winless streak for NASCAR’s most popular driver. The Cup Series race ended on the 16th caution after Elliott had taken the white flag for the 276th lap in a race scheduled for 267 at Fort Worth. Chastain got bumped from behind by reigning champ William Byron, who finished third behind Brad Keselowski when the final yellow flag came out. It was the first win for Elliott in the No. 9 since Talladega in October 2022. Elliott and Denny Hamlin were at the front after a restart with two laps left, and were racing all-out when Hamlin went hard into the wall going into Turn 4, sending the race to overtime.

Liverpool hopes take hit

A 1-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace damaged Liverpool’s English Premier League title challenge. Eberechi Eze scored in the 14th minute to give Liverpool its first league loss at home in 28 matches — dating to October 2022. Liverpool started the weekend in second place, behind Arsenal on goal difference, but is now in third and 2 points adrift of first-place Manchester City after the champions’ 5-1 thrashing of Luton on Saturday. Arsenal also lost Sunday, 2-0, at home to Aston Villa, and was ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Bayer Leverkusen wins

Bayer Leverkusen clinched the Bundesliga title for the first time to end Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign as champion. Florian Wirtz scored a hat trick as host Leverkusen routed Werder Bremen, 5-0 . . . Roma defender Evan Ndicka collapsed in the 71st minute of an Italian Serie A match at Udinese. The game was suspended with the score tied, 1-1. Ndicka, who never lost consciousn­ess, was under observatio­n.

Women’s FA Cup final set

Tottenham and Manchester United will contest the Women’s FA Cup final May 12 in London. Tottenham beat Leicester, 2-1, to reach the title match for the first time and Man United won by the same score against Chelsea — managed by Emma Hayes, the incoming coach of the US women’s national team.

Nazar scores on first shot

Frank Nazar scored on his first shot on goal in his NHL debut for the Blackhawks in Chicago's home finale, a 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes. Nazar signed Saturday, two days after Michigan was eliminated from the NCAA Frozen Four ... Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Casper Ruud, 6-1, 6-4, to win the clay-court Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco for the third time in four years . . . World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the Barcelona Open with a right forearm injury, leaving his French Open preparatio­n on hold.
