Man charged in mail carrier robbery
Lowell teen was arrested in N.H.
A Lowell teenager has been arrested and charged with robbing a US Postal Service mail carrier in New Hampshire, police said.
Baraka Janvier, 18, of Lowell, was arrested in Nashua on Wednesday. He is being held at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections and is scheduled to appear in court at 1 p.m. Thursday, police said.
The robbery is the latest in a series of crimes that have been committed against Postal Service employees over the past year. In January, two Brockton men were arrested in connection to the assault and robbery of a mail carrier on Dec. 27. The next day, a postal worker said his mail key was stolen at gunpoint in Dorchester.
On Oct. 31, a letter carrier was taken to the hospital after he was assaulted and robbed while delivering mail in Medford. In March 2023, a letter carrier was robbed in Randolph, and another postal employee was assaulted while delivering mail in a snowstorm in Lowell.
In Nashua, the mail carrier said he was held at gunpoint by a male suspect who was later identified as Janvier, police said.
“Janvier demanded the victim’s postal keys, which grants access to every mail dispenser” in the city, police said in a statement. “Officers were able to make contact with several witnesses and also located video surveillance of the incident.”
Investigators were able to identify “multiple people of interest and the vehicle the suspects used,” police said. “Detectives are still investigating the incident and no other arrests have been made at this time.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Nashua Police Department’s crime line at 603-5891665.
