Four finalists selected in Mast Roofing & Construction free roof giveaway

- Mast Roofing & Construction, Inc.

Mast Roofing & Construction, Inc. has announced the four finalists that have been selected in its 4th annual No Roof Left Behind™ community program.

Darlene Richard of Hamburg was nominated by Mary Ann Shuliga.

Darlene is a familiar face in Hamburg, having worked two jobs for years in order to maintain her home. Her roof is 35 years old and she has known for years that it needs replacing, but a series of hard knocks and health problems make it impossible to afford.

Last summer, a bad storm sent her chimney crashing down onto her roof, but insurance covered only the chimney because of the age of her roof.

Darlene is the kind of friend and neighbor that everyone wishes they had. She faithfully gives of her time every week to give her brother respite from caring for his wife who has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

She does so much for others, so her friends feel she deserves some good luck in return. She worries constantly that her roof will begin to leak and she may be forced to sell her beloved home. Her neighborhood does not want to lose her, and so they nominated their much loved friend to receive a much needed roof.

The second finalist is Gary Dorsett of Reading.

The historic hail storm on May 21, 2014 caused severe damage to Gary’s roof. He is a single parent of a five-year-old son diag- nosed with cerebral palsy. Before the storm, he had made the difficult decision to forego carrying property insurance in order to be able to afford hospice care for his ailing father. Now, two years later, the damage to his roof is becoming more and more evident - he is beginning to find shingles in his lawn. Through all his trials, he has kept a positive attitude and says, “The situation can be termed as not a problem but an opportunity.”

Richard and Marlene Leiby of Fleetwood were nominated by their daugther, Sarah James.

She says, “My parents have always been giving and supportive parents. They attended every softball game I ever played straight through college.

“More i mpor t antly, when they finally got their empty nest, they chose to take in my sister’s two oldest children. They have chosen to delay retirement and their “bucket lists” in order to provide a good life for the kids.” Marlene and Richard have been selflessly raising children and grandchildren for 40 years! They keep up with repairs to their house, but have not been able to put on the new roof that they need. It is more than 30 years old and failing. They would appreciate your vote!

The fourth finalists are Sean and Maureen Banks of Birdsboro.

After Sean and Maureen bought their house, Sean (a U.S. Marine) received orders to serve in Japan for two years. That was one year ago, so they have one more year to go. They knew the roof would need to be replaced and Sean planned to do it himself, but with being gone and the elements taking their toll on the roof it will need to be done sooner rather than later. He says, “My amazing wife takes care of our three boys and house work while I am gone. It would be greatly appreciated if we would be picked for this great honor. Thank you very much for your consideration.”

One of these Berks County residents will receive a free roof, valued around $5,000 to $10,000, from Mast Roofing & Construction, Inc. and their participating sponsors.

The winner will be revealed on June 17.

“We had wonderful nominees again this year,” said Corrie Mast, of Mast Roofing & Construction. “The process to narrow to the final four was extremely challenging. Our finalists are all very deserving.”
