Wysocki aiding Alvernia field hockey team

Junior midfielder scores twice in win over Wilkes

The junior midfielder had her best game of the season for the Alvernia field hockey team with two goals including the game-winner in a 4-1 victory over Wilkes last Saturday. He also had an assist in a 5-0 victory over Misericord­ia on Sept. 7.

“Andrea is much more focused this year at practice and her positionin­g on the post has improved which has allowed her to score more goals,” coach Laura Gingrich said. “She is also one of the hardest workers on the team.”

Wysocki entered the season having played in 43 games in her first two seasons and during that time she scored five goals with three assists for 13 points. Junior Breanne Smith (Tulpehocke­n) starts on defense for the Crusaders.

The 5-foot-8 junior has started all six games for the 5-1 Messiah field hockey team. She has a defensive save and has helped the No. 8 Falcons outscore foes 21-6 with shutouts over Juniata (3-0) and Haverford (7-0). She was named MAC Commonweal­th Defensive Player of the Week (Sept.12). Messiah’s only loss to date came in the season-opener on Sept. 1 when the Division III squad dropped a 1-0 decision to Shippensbu­rg, the No.2-ranked team in Division II.

The junior midfielder had a goal and an assist, including the gamewinner, in Misericord­ia’s 4-2 victory over Ursinus Sept. 3. He also had the assist on the game-winner in a 2-1 triumph over York last Friday. Kabinoff entered this season with five goals and an assist in 32 games and eight starts for the Bears who are 3-3 this season.

The 5-foot-6 freshman has played in six games and started four for the New Jersey Tech women’s soccer team. A defender, Sassaman has helped the Highlander­s outscore foes 14-6 with a 7-0 shutout of St. Peter’s the highlight game. NJIT is 4-4-2 after a 4-0-2 start with recent losses to Rider (1-0), Manhattan (10), Marist (2-0) and Temple (2-0) last Sunday.

The Douglassvi­lle native leads the Lehigh men’s soccer team in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points. The 6-foot-3 sophomore had all three goals in a 4-3 setback to Seton Hall and the only score in a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Last Saturday, he picked up an assist as the 2-4 Mountain Hawks dropped a 2-1 decision to Robert Morris. As a freshman, he led the Patriot League in goals with 11 and added another one in the NCAA Tournament.

Alexa Hoover is just a junior but she’s already the University of Pennsylvan­ia’s all-time scorer in field hockey. Hoover, from Collegevil­le (Methacton), was named Ivy League CoPlayer of the Week (Sept. 12) after she scored nine points in two victories. On Sept. 9, in a 6-0 triumph over LIUBrookly­n, the 5-foot-2 forward had a goal and an assist. Then, on Sept. 11, she had two goals and two assists in a 5-4 overtime victory over St. Joseph’s.

The effort gives Hoover 103 points which broke a team record that was set by Lisa Romig (1978-81). She has 44 goals which ties Romig for the most in school history.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Alexa for her accomplish­ments,” coach Colleen Fink said. “She loves the game, works incredibly hard, plays with passion and is a natural born playmaker. She deserves all of the recognitio­n for her accolades and record-breaking performanc­es.”

Freshman Laura Shelton (Perkiomen Valley) has seen action in the backfield off the bench.

The Quakers are 4-1 after a 2-1 overtime victory over Fairfield last Friday. They open Ivy League play on Saturday against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.

The senior goalkeeper has led the Connecticu­t women’s soccer team to a 7-2 record. She’s played all 818 minutes and has given up eight goals and has 37 saves with four shutouts. She was named American Athletic Conference Keeper of the Week (Sept. 5) after a 1-0 victory over Pacific and a 2-1 triumph over Central Connecticu­t. Armstrong was 18-4 last season and was named the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

The 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll (Sept. 11) after helping the Temple women’s volleyball team post a 2-1 a record week earlier. The Owls lost 3-2 to Cleveland State but defeated New Hampshire 3-2 and Rutgers 3-0. The highlight was a 12-kill, nine-block performanc­e against New Hampshire. She leads the 7-2 Owls in solo blocks with six and total blocks with 44 and has 68 kills.

The senior linebacker was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a big performanc­e in Juniata’s 41-21 victory over Dickinson on Sept. 10. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound pounder had nine tackles, but came up with the big play of the game in the first quarter when the Dickinson quarterbac­k fumbled and Bologa picked it up an raced 22 yards for a touchdown. He has 189 career tackles with 2.5 sacks. He has two intercepti­ons and his fumble recovery against Dickinson was the fourth of his career and the second resulting in a touchdown.

Suero, a freshman defender and last year’s Mercury All-Area Player of the Year, scored the Nittany Lions’ lone goal in a 1-0 win over Wisconsin on Sunday, her first collegiate score. She, along with sophomore midfielder Knaub and freshman goalkeeper Valenti have seen action in reserve for 5-2-2 Penn State (1-0-1 Big Ten).

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward kicked off his final season with the West Chester men’s soccer team in fine style. He had a goal in a 3-0 victory over Philadelph­ia on Sept. 1 and came back with a goal in a 3-1 triumph over PittJohnst­own on Sept. 3. Those are his only goals thus far this season but it gives him a total of 27 for his career having played in 57 games with 38 starts for the Golden Rams who are 4-1-1 this season.

The sophomore is starting in goal for the Wilmington, Del. men’s soccer team. He’s 3-1 and has given up seven goals with 16 saves with a 5-0 shutout of Chestnut Hill. He had a seasonhigh six saves in a 3-2 season-opening victory over New York Tech. As a freshman, Taska played in seven games with four starts and was 3-3 with a shutout.

The senior captain finished fifth out of 50 runners to help her Monmouth women’s cross-country team capture the 22nd Monmouth Invitation­al last Saturday in Holmdel, N.J. Her 5k time was 19:07.07. That was more than a minute better than her effort in the Fordham Invitation­al Sept. 10 in the Bronx when she finished 25th with a time of 20:12.

The senior midfielder has started all seven games for the American University field hockey team. She’s picked up three assists giving her 13 assists to go along with two goals in her career. Marsh has also helped the defense give up 12 goals with half of those coming in a 6-1 loss to No. 7-ranked Maryland. The Eagles are 5-2 after an 8-1 victory over Holy Cross last Saturday.
