Fries fueling Kent State field hockey

Junior defender an Oley graduate

JAMIE FRIES (OLEY VALLEY) >> The junior has started all 10 games for the 6-4 Kent State field hockey team. She’s played 617 minutes, including all 85 in a 3-2 overtime victory over Longwood on Sept. 25. She’s helped the defense limit foes to 21 goals with a shutout (2-0 over California on Sept. 2). Fries started all 20 games last season and she was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n National Division I academic squad. She earned the same honor as a freshman.

EMILY GILBERT (BOYERTOWN) >> The sophomore kicked off the fall season with the Alvernia women’s golf team by finishing eighth at the Lebanon Valley Invitation­al on Sept. 10 with an 84. She shot another 84 but earned medalist honors to lead the Crusaders to a 381-393 victory over Albright Sept. 22 in Reading. She shot a oneover-par 38 on the back nine. Gilbert finished fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championsh­ip last April.

MEGAN KIDA (OLEY VALLEY) >> The 5-foot-4

sophomore has started all eight games on defense for the La Salle field hockey team which stands 3-5. The Explorers have given up 14 goals and have two shutouts – Central Michigan (2-0) in the opener on Aug. 27 and Lock Haven (1-0) on Sept. 16. Kida was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team after playing in 17 games with 15 starts as a freshman.

BEN FOREMAN (OLEY VALLEY) >> The sophomore opened the season with the Albright men’s golf team with an 84 at the Messiah Falcon Classic Sept. 13 in Harrisburg. He followed that up with a 78 at the Elizabetht­own Invitation­al Sept. 20 in Hershey. On Sept. 24, he shared low round with a teammate for the Lions when he shot an 87 at the Gettysburg Invitation­al in Abbottstow­n. CASEY UMSTEAD (UPPER PERKIOMEN) >> The University of Connecticu­t field hockey team is flying high and a big reason is the

play of junior Casey Umstead.

Umstead (Upper Perkiomen) has eight goals and three assists for 19 points for the 9-0 Huskies. She has two game-winners and is 3-for-3 on penalty strokes. Her penalty stroke was the deciding score in a 2-1 victory over Massachuse­tts on Sept. 9. She had a goal in a 6-0 victory over Temple last Friday and two goals in a 5-1 victory over Boston University last Sunday.

“Casey had a terrific summer training with the United States Junior National program,” coach Nancy Stevens said. “She has continued to develop into one of the top backs in the country.”

Umstead provides the team with attacking options from the left back position and plays critical roles in both the attack and defensive penalty corners according the Stevens.

“Casey’s commitment to excellence on the playing field is matched by her stellar work in the classroom,” the coach said.

Umstead had 18 goals and seven assists for 43

points and was 6-for-6 in penalty strokes in 23 starts last season and had nine goals and two assists for 20 points in 22 games and eight starts as a freshman. SAM RUMLER (DANIEL

BOONE) >> The 5-foot-4 goalkeeper had a breakout season with the Millersvil­le field hockey team as a junior and she’s proving to be just as good – if not better – this season. She and the Marauders are 6-1 after opening the PSAC season with a 3-1 victory over Indiana last Saturday in Millersvil­le. She’s given up four goals and has 14 saves with four shutouts and she posted three straight shutouts (Sept. 10-17) beating Seton Hill (3-0), Slippery Rock (3-0) and No. 4-ranked Kutztown (1-0). The only loss came against No. 6-ranked Stonehill 2-0 on Sept. 5.

“Sam prepares and works well in training and her game-day approach is pretty matter of fact and business-like,” coach Shelly Behrens said.

Rumler played three total games her first two years with the team, but was 13-3 with 11 shutouts giving up just five goals with 14 saves last season. MADDIE FOX (UPPER PERKIOMEN) >> The junior midfielder was named ECAC South Offensive Player of the Week and MAC Commonweal­th Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 20 for her play with the Lebanon Valley field hockey team, which posted a 3-0 record during the week. Fox leads the 7-2 Dutchwomen with four goals and three assists for 11 points. She had two goals in a big double overtime 4-3 victory over No. 9 William Smith on Sept. 18. She also had the game-winner in the season-opening 2-1 triumph over Drew. LAURA SUERO (SPRING FORD) >> The freshman scored her first college goal for the Penn State women’s soccer team and it proved to be the gamewinner in a 1-0 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin Sept. 10 in Madison. She was named Big Ten Co Freshman of the Week for her effort. Suero, who also has an assist, has played in eight games off the bench for the 16th-ranked Nittany Lions who are 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league play. ALAYNA ROESENER (DANIEL BOONE) >> The 5-foot10 freshman has started all seven games on defense for the Stevenson women’s soccer team. She

scored in the 84th minute against Salisbury for her first collegiate goal to give the Mustangs a 2-1 victory. Roesener has helped the 3-3-1 Stevenson squad limit foes to just nine goals with three shutouts. PATRICK CARMODY (THE

HILL SCHOOL) >> The 6-foot2, 170-pounder from Fogelsvill­e is a key performer on the Navy men’s water polo team. He has six goals and six assists for 12 points with eight steals for the Midshipmen who are 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mid Atlantic Water Polo Conference. Carmody has 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points for his career. DARRELL SCOTT (DANIEL BOONE) >> The 5-foot-9, 205-pound red-shirt senior running back had his best game of the season to help Kutztown defeat Millersvil­le 41-13 last Saturday, the Golden Bears first victory over three losses. Scott carried the ball 12 times for 94 yards, 7.8 yards per carry. In four games, he’s carried the ball 38 times for 187 yards. Last season, he carried the ball 119 times for 601 yards and five touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 86 yards. CAYLA VEVERKA (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The 6-foot-4 freshman outside

hitter is having a solid first season with the Providence women’s volleyball team which is 12-6 overall but 0-2 in the Big East Conference after a 3-2 loss to DePaul and a 3-0 setback to Marquette last weekend in Providence, R.I. Veverka is third on the team in kills (129) and third in blocks (31). She also has 32 digs. GRACE DAWSON (POPE JOHN

PAUL II) >> The Millersvil­le women’s volleyball team is off to a 2-9 start but Dawson is having a solid season with the Marauders. The 5-foot-5 sophomore setter has 354 assists, 105 digs, 24 kills, 13 blocks and four service aces. She had 43 assists and 14 digs in a 3-1 loss to Philadelph­ia on Sept. 2 and 41 assists, 14 digs and eight kills in a 3-2 setback to Wilmington, Del. on Sept. 7 KATELYN HUTCHINSON (ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL) >> The Pottstown native leads the

6-3 Kenyon field hockey team in goals with seven and points with 16. The junior also has two assists and had both goals in a 2-1 victory over Wittenberg. She also had two goals in a 3-0 triumph over the College of Wooster. Hutchinson had 12 goals and three assists in 32 games in her first two seasons with the Ladies. CAITLIN CORCORAN (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The 6-foot-1 freshman middle blocker is a starter with the 3-11 Bentley women’s volleyball team. She’s fourth on the team in kills with 70 and second on the team in blocks with 25 including five solos. She also has 13 digs. Corcoran had a big effort in the second match of the season, a 3-2 loss to Lynn on Sept. 2 when he had a season high 14 kills.
