Oley Valley tops Twin Valley for 14th Berks title

- Staff reports

Oley Valley claimed yet another Berks Conference field hockey championship this past week.

And the Lynx did so in the same dominating style that propelled them through a perfect regular season.

Oley secured the 14th Berks title in program history with its 3-0 win over Twin Valley. It used Becca Heffner’s goal less than two minutes into the game to start a roll that saw it build a 3-0 lead by halftime, then clamp down on the Raiders the rest of the way.

Sophia Gladieux scored the Lynx’ other two goals, with Heffner assisting on one. Andrea Hinkle and Shannon Lackey were also credited with assists while Caitlin Drobek secured the shutout with saves on OV’s two shots.

Talayna Viscuso had five stops for the Raiders, who were outshot by an 8-2 margin.

In the semifinal round, Oley nipped Wilson 2-1 while TV blanked Schuylkill Valley, 3-0.

Gladieux scored goals in each half for the Lynx, with Sarah Beers and Madison Kline getting credit for assists. Kendall Duffy netted the Bulldogs’ goal in the second half, with Julia Strobel on the assist. Azure Fernsler dealt with 16 shots at the Wilson nets, making 14 saves.

In the other semi, Twin Valley built a 3-0 halftime lead on SV with Grace Hiddeman scoring twice and Erica Wolfgang once. Hannah Menge assisted on all three Raider tallies, with Viscuso making six goalie saves and Menge one.

SV’s goalie, Sierra Pullano, had eight saves.

In the course of its 20-0 campaign — including an 8-0 run against Berks regular-season opponents — Oley outscored the opposition by a 117-7 margin. It had two games scoring 10 or more goals.

Defensively, the Lynx recorded 15 shutouts, including 12 in a row. They had only one game of the remaining five where an opponent scored more than one goal.
