- By Bill Arsenault For Digital First Media

Ally Mooney had a standout freshman season in goal for the Shippensburg field hockey team but took a medical red-shirt last year. So, the Owen J. Roberts grad needed to come up big this season. All she did was lead the Raiders to the NCAA Division II championship.

Mooney and Shippensburg finished 20-3 after defeating LIU-Post 2-1 for the national championship on Nov. 20 in Easton, Mass. She gave up just 10 goals (0.43 goals against average) and had 84 saves (.894 save percentage) with 13 shutouts. She didn’t give up more than two goals in any game.

Ship rebounded from two late-season losses – 2-1 to East Stroudsburg on Oct. 22 and 2-1 to Millersville in the PSAC Championship game. In the NCAAs, Mooney turned back East Stroudsburg 2-1 in the first round and Millersville 1-0 in the semifinals.

Mooney earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II second team and PSAC second team as a freshman. She had a 12-5 record starting all 17 games and gave up 13 goals with 64 saves and four shutouts.

The freshman kicked off his career with the Lehigh wrestling team by capturing the 285 pound title at the East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 6. Wrestling unattached, Wood went 5-0 with pins in his first two bouts and then posting decisions in the next three bouts. He defeated Franklin & Marshall’s Antonio Peluso 3-1 in the semifinals and Navy’s Andrew Piehl 7-2 in the finals. Wood is one of three wrestlers vying for mat time behind senior Doug Vollaro and will probably be red-shirted.

The junior scored a goal for the King’s women’s soccer team in a double overtime 1-1 tie with FDU-Florham in a game to decide the final spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament. But the team missed out on a tie-breaker and saw the season end with an 8-7-1 record and a 3-3-1 league mark. Tucker finished with two goals and three assists on the season and one of her assists set up the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Delaware Valley on Oct. 18.

The freshman is scoring points mainly in relays for the Stevens men’s swim team. He swam a leg on the 400 free relay that finished first in the Merchant Marine Academy Invitational Nov. 19 in Kings Point, N.Y. in a time of 3:15.93. That same unit finished second at the New York University Invitational on Nov. 5 in New York City. In a 140122 loss to Rowan on Oct. 29, he helped the 200 free relay finish second and he finished third in the 50 freestyle in 22.53. The senior was named the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season after another outstanding effort with the Connecticut women’s soccer team. She played every minute (2,090) for the 19-3-1 Huskies and gave up 20 goals (0.86 goals against average) and had 93 saves (.823 save percentage) with 11 shutouts. UConn finished 8-0-1 during the regular AAC season and beat SMU 1-0 on Nov. 6 to earn a berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament. The Huskies turned back Albany 4-2 in the first round on Nov. 12 but were beaten 4-1 by Auburn in the second round on Nov. 18.

Armstrong finished her career with a 53-17-4 record with 27 shutouts in 87 games and 67 starts. She gave up 77 goals (0.99) and had 287 saves (.788).

The Stevenson freshman was named to the MAC Commonwealth first team in women’s soccer. A defender, she had two goals and three assists for seven points with a gamewinner in a 2-1 victory over Salisbury on Sept. 21. Roesener started all 19 games and helped the Mustangs limit foes to 28 goals with seven shutouts. The team was 9-8-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league play and saw the season end with a 3-1 loss to Grove City in the ECAC Tournament second round on Nov.13.

The senior captain had a solid week competing with the Marywood men’s swim team. On Nov. 13, he won the 1,000 freestyle (10:43.48) and the 100 freestyle (50.19) in a 157-98 victory over Cabrini. Then, on Nov. 19, he won the 100 free (50.0) and the 200 free (2:51.3) in a 177-100 setback to Scranton. On Oct. 22, Scholl finished second in both the 100 (50.09) and 200 free (1:53.72) in a 97-70 loss to Division I Manhattan.

The junior had five goals and three of them were game-winners for the Swarthmore women’s soccer team. The 5-foot-4 midfielder had game-winners early in the season in a 1-0 victory over Scranton and a 2-0 triumph over Shenandoah. She also had the winning goal in a 2-1 win over Haverford on Oct. 29. The Garnet finished 15-4 overall and despite losing 3-1 to Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference semifinals earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament where they were beaten 4-2 by Amherst in the second round. Hancock had a goal in the game.

Stednitz, a Governor Mifflin grad, kicked off the season going 8-1 at both 165 and 174. He scored three victories in the Green Terror Duals on Nov. 19 in Westminster, Md.

Prior to the start of the season, Stednitz was ranked fourth in the country in the 165-pound class by D2Wrestle.com.

“Keith is a huge part of our program,” coach Sam Gardner said. “He’s a hardnosed dedicated wrestler and fun to be around. He combines a good sense of humor and kindness off the mat with a killer instinct on it.”

One of the keys to the wrestler’s success is his ability to scramble which the coach feels is second to none.

“You think you have him in a bad position and he comes out of it on top,” Gardner said. “He is a devastating rider and pinner. He has the ability to make life miserable for whoever he gets on top of.”

The 5-foot-9, 221-pound junior fullback rushed for 91 yards on 21 carries and caught one pass for 29 yards for the Lebanon Valley football team but he was still named to the Middle Atlantic Conference first team. Lysczek was the lead blocker for an offensive unit that picked up 2,060 yards on the ground in 10 games. His best effort was 37 yards on six carries in a 28-25 victory over Albright in the final game of the season on Nov. 12. The Dutchmen finished 4-6 overall and 4-5 in league play.

The team was 9-8-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league play and saw the season end with a 3-1 loss to Grove City in the ECAC second round on Nov.13.

The redshirt junior is averaging 12.0 points and 3.0 rebounds for the Division II Erskine women’s basketball team. The 5-foot-6 guard also has seven assists and six steals for the 1-3 Flying Fleet. She had 16 points in an 84-65 loss to North Georgia on Nov. 12 and 13 points in a 70-57 loss to Barton to open the Conference Carolinas campaign on Nov. 22. She’s a transfer from Washington College.

The senior is scoring points in the freestyle and the backstroke for the Lycoming women’s swim team. She took the 100 free (59.77) in a 125-118 loss to Messiah on Nov. 19. A solid performer for the Warriors the previous three seasons, Black has competed in four events at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships each year and has earned second team AllMAC twice swimming in relay events.

The 6-foot-1 junior middle blocker was named to the PSAC third team for her play with the West Chester women’s volleyball team. She led the Golden Rams in solo blocks with 34 and total blocks with 111 and was second in kills with 229 and points scored 301.5. She also had a solid .300 attack percentage and 21 digs playing in all 33 matches and 119 out of 120 sets. The team finished 22-11 overall and 9-9 in PSAC play.
