Brensinger a bright spot for PSU-Berks
SAM BRENSINGER (BOYERTOWN) >> The 5-foot-1 freshman guard scored a college career high 26 points but it wasn’t enough as the Penn State-Berks women’s basketball team dropped a 90-69 decision to Gallaudet on Dec. 3. Brensinger hit 10 of 18 shots from the field with one 3-pointer and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. She also had five assists and three steals in 30 minutes of action. She sat out most of the third quarter with foul trouble. She’s averaging 12.5 points and leads the 1-5 Nittany Lions in assists with 28.
TAYLOR CISIK (BOYERTOWN) >> The sophomore had a solid performance for the Indiana women’s swim team at the Magnus Cup Nov. 18-20 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a member of the 800 free relay which finished 10th, the 200 and 400 medley relays which each finished 13th and the 400 free relay which finished 14th against mainly Division I colleges. She also helped the Crimson Hawks finish 10th in the team standings by finishing 26th in the 100 backstroke (59.45), 32nd out of 103 swimmers in the 100 free (53.42) and 45th out of 140 in the 50 free (24.74). The majority of the swimmers finishing ahead of her were from Division I. RUSSELL LAMBERT (BOYERTOWN) >> The senior had a solid meet but his Lafayette men’s swim team came up short in a 170-92 decision over rival Lehigh Nov. 18 in the Leopards newly-renovated Weinstein Natatorium in Easton. Lambert finished second in the 100 breaststroke (59.75) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.20). He also swam a leg on the 200 medley relay which finished second (1:36.27).
BLOOMSBURG MEN’S SWIMMING >> The Bloomsburg men’s swim team has kicked off the season by going 5-0 in dual meets and four area athletes are key performers on the team. The top man, however, is sophomore Kyle Dix.
Dix, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound Perkiomen Valley graduate, is a versatile performer. He finishes first or scores big points in a number of events and he’s also a key man on most of the relays. His biggest victory to date was winning the 50 free (20.06) at the Zippy Invitational Dec. 2-4 in Akron, OH. He was competing against mostly Division I swimmers. Dix has won seven individual and been on seven winning relays ion the five dual meets.
“Kyle had a tremendous first half of the season,” coach Stu Marvin said. “He has shown incredible versatility in a number of events.”
Dix is currently ranked first in the 100 fly, second in the 50 free and 200 fly, third in the 100 free and seventh in the 200 free on the PSAC performance list.
“Kyle’s 50 free time will be fast enough to earn him another trip to the Division II NCAA Championship in March,” Marvin said. “When the season is over, Kyle should be holding multiple All-American awards.”
The Huskies also get plenty of victories and plenty of points from juniors Sam Feiser and Alex McCullough and
sophomore Colin Bauer, all Owen J. Roberts grads. Feiser has five individual firsts and has been with five winning relays, McCullough and Bauer have two firsts each and have each been on two winning relays.
The La Salle junior captured the long jump and finished second in the high jump at the annual Jack Pyrah Invitational Dec. 3 in Philadelphia. He posted a personal record indoors in the long jump with a 22-1 ½ effort. His top jump with the Explorers came outdoors as a freshman when he posted a 22-8 performance at the Rider Invitational April 6, 2015. In the high jump, Worthington cleared 6-1¼. His indoor high jump best is 6-6¾ coming at Yale’s Giegengack Invitational on Feb. 6, 2015.
The Wagner junior was named Co-Diver of the Week by the Northeast Conference on Dec. 6 for her performance in the ECAC Winter Championships Dec. 2-4 in East Meadow, N.Y. She was also named the Diver of the Meet after she finished first in the 1-meter (228.95 points) and the 3-meter (238.25 points). Lavrich finished fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter at the Frank Elm Invitational Nov. 20 in Piscataway, N.J. and her 1-meter total (244.45) is a Wagner school record.
The 5-foot-6 sophomore is starting for the 4-6 Elizabethtown women’s basketball team. She’s averaging 12.0 points with 23 rebounds, 15 steals and 14 assists. She’s hit 16 of 35 3-point attempts (45.7 percent) and is 20-for-24 from the free throw line (.833). Bossler had a college career high 18 points in a 67-48 loss to Messiah on Dec. 5 with the help of four 3-pointers. She opened the season with 17 points in a 64-58 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Nov. 15.
The 6-foot-2, 213-pound senior has been a valuable reserve for the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team in his career but he’s really starting to contribute of late. He had a career-high 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 72-71 victory over Drexel on Dec. 11, eight points and seven rebounds in a 76-68 victory over Princeton on Dec. 14, nine points and four rebounds in an 8172 loss to Illinois State on Dec. 18 and six points, five rebounds and two steals in a 92-63 triumph over Lafayette on Dec. 22.
He’s just a freshman but Schneider has already become a key performer for the Elizabethtown men’s swim team. In a 131-73 victory over Lebanon Valley prior to the break on Nov. 21, he captured the 50 freestyle (2576) and swam anchor legs on the winning 200 medley relay (1:56.30) and the 200 free relay (1:44.03). In a victory over FDU-Florham (138-63) and a loss to Drew (113-86) on Nov. 19, he finished second in the 50 free (23.24) and helped the 200 and 400 medley relays finish second.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior had his best game of the season to help the unbeaten Ramapo men’s basketball team defeat Farmingdale State 88-73 in a non-league game on Dec. 15. Stanek came off the bench and played 24 minutes, scoring 12 points, pulling down nine rebounds with two steals and an assist. He’s averaging 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds for the Roadrunners who are 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
