Berks County Wine Trail battles winter chill

-

Now that winter is here and the holidays are over, it’s time to find ways to fight of the winter blues. If you’re looking for an easy and fun way to put winter’s icy temps behind you, stop by the wineries of the Berks County Wine Trail on Saturday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 15 for an expedient warm up! At each winery along the Berks County Wine Trail, samples of featured Pennsylvania produced wines will be served up with an array of creative warmers ranging from soups, chili, stews, warmed spiced wines and more. This event is free, and no reservations required. The event is noon to 5 p.m. both days.

January is also a great time get out and replenish one’s wine cellar after the holidays, too! Not only will the featured wines during this event be great to consider to bring home by the bottle, but this will be a great weekend plan your own self-guided tour to explore each wineries’ full wine bar tasting menus, too.

Some warm thoughts to think about in anticipation of this wine and warm foodie event are wines such as Merlot from both Weathered Vineyards winery & Stone Barn Cellars; Chambourcin from Pinnacle Ridge Winery; or Spiced Apple Wine from Bashore & Stoudt Country Winery.

Make a weekend out of it by visiting all the wineries to taste all that they offer; or just day trip it with a visit to just a handy group in a geographic section of the greater Berks County region. As Winter Warmers is a self-guided tour of the wine trail, maps & directions are available on the wine trail’s website.

To tempt you further about what’s in store for the new year with the Berks County Wine Trail - here’s a taste of what you’ll be sipping and slurping during your Winter Warmer adventure. For a complete menu of warming pairings visit the “events” page of the wine trail’s website www. berkscountywinetrail.com:

Spiced Sweet Potato Soup paired with Blair Vineyards’ white wine blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinto Gris, in a little warmer called Lovers Leap.

Manatawny Creek Winery’s Creamy cauliflower soup paired with 2014 Chardonnay white wine will be soothing the soul on any cold Winter afternoon. Light and yet filing and always lovely to discover a wine to enjoy with a steamy bowl of warm soup!

Spoonfuls of warmth through Southwest Turkey Chili paired with Kog Hill Winery’s signature Twin Valley Red wine. A soft, lightly sweet red that mellows out the heat of the chili giving the sensation of a warm shawl over one’s shoulders.

The featured wine & warmers pairings are free during this event, but samplings of full tasting menus at select wineries requires a modest fee (which is refundable with purchase of wine).

And the wine trail has Happy New Year tidings to share - addition of a new winery to the trail! Ridgewood Winery in Birdsboro! Details about the newest addition available on the Berks County Wine Trail website.
