76>> The Bears’ Jerry Kapp went off for a school-record 47 points and sunk the game-winning 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left to cap a 20-point second-half comeback on Jan. 14.

Kapp broke the school record for most points in a game previously held by Brad Unger (Class of 2004). Of the four times in the past 50 years someone on Boyertown has scored more than 40 points in a game, the Bears had lost the last two and hadn’t won one of them since 1965.

Wrestling

Jesse Enck found defense of his Berks County 220-pound wrestling championship a tough go.

Enck had to literally go the extra mile — make that periods — to repeat as an individual champion at the county tournament Saturday. The Daniel Boone senior got a handful from Oley Valley’s Daymond Zweizig in their title bout at Reading High’s Geigle Complex. But he persevered, and his reward was an overtime victory and continued possession of his weight class at the county level.

Enck took a tenuous 1-0 lead over Zweizig into the third period of their goldmedal bout. The Lynx senior escaped from a bottom ride with one minute left in regulation, forcing the bout into overtime.

Enck got the upper hand in OT, 3-2. He was one of three Boone wrestlers to reach the championship final, and one of two to claim gold.

Steven Spitko won out at 106, the Blazer freshman scoring a 1:49 pin of Exeter’s Jacob Keller. At 132, Jack Zummo encountered Exeter’s Austin DeSanto — a two-time state qualifier, PIAA runner-up at 120 last year — and the Eagle senior scored his third Berks title off a first-period technical fall.

Oley’s Dylan Lambert placed second at 145, Johnny Wertz was fourth at 152 and Charles Wildermuth rallied to finish third with a 10-5 decision of Schuylkill Valley’s George Limberiou in the medal round.

Exeter repeated as Berks team champion on the strength of five individual titlists: DeSanto, Ryan Watts (113), Tyler Bagoly (170), Dennis Karas (195) and Oscar Daniels (285). Gov. Mifflin’s Alex Centeno, champion at 120, was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
