NEW HANOVER >> Police work that resulted in two would-be burglars being sent back to prison was recognized Monday night, Feb. 27, by the Board of Supervisors with commendations for the officers.

On Dec. 16, two men arrived at a home in the 200 block of Kulps Road posing as electrical contractors, according to the narrative read by Supervisors’ Chairman Phil Agliano.

“One of the males had actually entered the home with the resident and was acting suspiciously once inside,” according to the narrative, put together by Police Chief Kevin McKeon.

“After the resident’s husband came downstairs, the male ultimately indicated that he had the wrong house and was looking for Stowe,” McKeon wrote.

The two men left but Officer Michael Salvo stopped a vehicle matching a description offered by the resident. At the same

time, Officer Dennis Psota and Detective Dekkar Dyas were interviewing the residents whose home the two man had visited.

Police determined that rather than being electrical contractors, the two man “may have been attempting to burglarize the residence,” McKeon wrote.

They were taken into custody for burglary and related offenses and were subsequently shown to have extensive criminal records and to be on parole from state prison at the time of their arrest.

Previous charges had included attempted murder, robbery, burglary, assault, arson and drug offenses. McKeon said both defendants were later convicted and sentenced to prison terms.

“Had it not been for the collaborative effort and outstanding work of these officers, these violent criminals may have eluded arrest and victimized other residents of New Hanover,” McKeon said.
