Rahmer rolls to victory at Williams Grove

- By Ken Johnson For Digital First Media

Freddie Rahmer stole the show late on Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway, coming forward from the ninth starting spot to record the 410 sprint car win over Cory Haas, who led all but the final two laps. And in the 358 sprint car main, Kevin Nouse pulled off the same feat, leading only the last two laps, to pick up the feature event. Cory Haas and Matt Campbell started on the front row of the 410 sprint car feature and Haas took the lead at the start, chased closely by Campbell. Only one caution flag on the final lap would slow the hectic pace in the feature and before that, both Campbell and Lucas Wolfe took their shots at the win. Cory Hass was second and Matt Campbell rode home third followed by Rick Lafferty and 11th starter Brian Montieth. Sixth through 10th went to Danny Dietrich, Brock Zearfoss, Greg Hodnett, Doug Esh and Alan Krimes. The win was the seocond of young Rahmer’s career at the oval and it was worth $4,100 including a $500 bonus for winning from the fifth row. Last season, in his first year of USAC All Pro SpeedSTR competition, Steve Drevicki served notice that he would be among the top contenders each time his RoadRunner Race Fuels/VP Race Fuels No. 19s took the green flag. On Friday night at Linda’s Speedway, in the first Action Track Takeover Night of the new campaign, Drevicki became the year’s first winner of a SpeedSTR main event.

The Reading driver, who notched one triumph at Action Track USA in Kutztown during the 2016 season, spent the early part of the race dueling with polesitter Doug Manmiller while being tailed by defending National SpeedSTR Champion and a fourtime winner at Linda’s in 2016, Pottstown’s Tim Buckwalter.

Drevicki darted back in front of Manmiller on lap 22 before the Hamburg racer ran into trouble and bowed out. At the finish, it was Drevicki by 1.362-seconds over Jeff Hartman, whose car would not pass post-race tech inspection, resulting in a DQ for the Jersey driver. That moved Bednar to second in the final rundown, with Steven Nederostek rallying late for what became a third place finish. Tim Iulg and Matt Janisch completed the top five.

Other winners were Bethlehem’s Tommy Kunsman, Shillington’s Seth Spayd and Logan Diehl. Davie Franek of Sussex, N.J., scored the $2,500 win over a talented 360 sprint car field in the 30-lap 37th annual Jack Gunn Memorial Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. The victory was Franek’s second in a row at the track this season, 13th career, and first in the Gunn race. Hayes Mattern of Beavertown powered to a convincing win in the 25-lap super late model feature. The win was Mattern’s first of the season and third career in super late model racing at Selinsgrove Franek crossed the line to claim his first Jack Gunn Memorial race. Franek said in victory lane he was not sure what to expect after the fuel stop because he didn’t feel his car was good on a full fuel load. It made no difference on this night though with Franek winning for the second week in a row. Greg Hodnett, Curt Michael, Robbie Stillwagon, and Adam Carberry were the top five across the line.
