Pine Forge Blue, Boyertown White win playoff openers

Senior Babe Ruth Baseball

Pine Forge defeated Berks Thunder 17-1 on Sunday in their opener of the ChesMont Senior Babe Ruth League playoffs thanks in part to Jonathan Wack, who drove in four runs and pitched five strong innings.

Pine Forge captured the early lead in the first inning on Nick Chroscinsk­i’s sacrifice fly which was quickly followed by an error, a walk to Wack, and a walk by Victor Feliz to score three more in the first.

Pine Forge Indians’ seven runs in the second inning. The big inning was thanks to a home run by Ben Longacre, a double, and a home run by Yadriel Parrilla.

Wack earned the win for Pine Forge throwing all five innings, giving up one run, two hits, and striking out four. Smith took the loss for Berks Thunder. He pitched two and a third innings, surrenderi­ng 15 runs, and ten hits.

Pine Forge Indians collected 12 hits. Sam Longacre (3-for-3), Ryan Jacobs, and Wack each collected multiple hits for Pine Forge Indians.

In other Chesmont League playoff games Sunday, Boyertown White defeated Avon Grove 1-0, Caln No. 2 defeated Pine Forge Red 5-0 and Twin Valley defeated Norchester No. 3, 3-2.

The Boyertown Midget Baseball League’s newly-formed Kodiak team came out swinging in their inaugural season ending with a second place finish and a record of 12-4 in their regular season.

The Kodiaks also took time to participat­e in a college showcase tournament ... something they will continue to do in future seasons, to allow the players the opportunit­y show their skills in front of scouts/ coaches from 20 different colleges.

The team consists of former American Legion players, veteran Senior Babe Ruth players, former travel-ball players and former youth Legion players. Nick Esz and Kaleb Miller have led the team in hitting throughout the regular season while Alex Bernhard, Ryan Meier, Dan Rodgers and Evan Crowe lead the team in pitching. The team’s strong defense is anchored by Pat Maloney, Anthony Rota, Josh Melchoir, Colin Maloney and Caleb Harrison. The roster also includes Ryan Holzman, Joe Melchoir, Charles Orfe, Nyk Rusin, Colin Retzlaff, Brandon Richards and Trevor McCafferty.

The team is coached by Greg Bernhard, a 12-year veteran of Senior Babe Ruth baseball.

The Bear Cubs are 19-1 in the Berks League and 28-2 overall.

Jackson backed his winning mound work by plating the game’s lone run, a fielder’s choice hit that scored Broc Babb. Tre Diguglielm­o picked up the save by giving the Bear-Cubs (17-1, 232) two innings of scoreless relief. BOYERTOWN BEAR CUBS 16,

KUTZTOWN 0 » The Bear Cubs crossed 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning while three pitchers combined for a no-hitter on the way to a five-inning Berks County League win over Kutztown on June 28.

Pat Wieand, Tyler Hoffman and Mason Kurtz combined for the no-hit effort. Gavin Henderson finished with a pair of hits and five RBI while Daniel Goffredo had a triple and three RBI. Sam Legerton finished with three hits and a pair of runs scored.
