Dorman goes over 1,000 kills for Widener volleyball

NICOLE DORMAN (POPE JOHN

PAUL II) » Nicole Dorman needed 19 kills to reach the 1,000 mark in her career with the Widener women’s volleyball team. She got a season-high 21 in a 3-1 MAC Commonweal­th victory over Albright on Sept. 20 in Reading. She also had 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

The 5-foot-11 junior middle hitter from East Norriton (Pope John Paul II) now has 1,002 kills for her career.

“This is an incredible accomplish­ment for Nicole,” coach Donovan Anglin said. “Most players don’t reach that milestone until their senior year. For her to reach it just three weeks into her junior season is truly amazing. I’m very proud of her.”

Dorman has a teamhigh 191 kills and is second in digs with 170. She leads the Pride with 22 service aces and is third in total blocks with 34. In 77 career matches and 276 sets

she also has 695 digs, 109 total blocks, 73 service aces and 48 assists. And, she’s scored 1,132.5 points and has a combined .225 attack percentage.

Widener stands 6-9 overall and 1-1 in league play after the Albright victory. SKYLER FRETZ (OLEY VALLEY) » The senior is a standout performer on defense for the No. 3-ranked Penn State field hockey team. She’s started all eight games and has a team-high four defensive saves. Fretz started every game the previous two seasons (39) and had six defensive saves to give her 10 for her career. The Nittany Lions opened the season with seven straight victories but saw the string end with a 2-0 loss to defending national champion Delaware on Sept. 17 in Lancaster. MICHAEL MURPHY (BOYERTOWN) » The Wilkes football team is off to a tough start but the Colonels are getting a solid effort on defense from the 5-foot11, 195-pound junior linebacker. Murphy has five solos

and 16 assists for a total of 21 tackles. He’s been credited with half a sack and a pass breakup. Prior to this season, Murphy had played in 16 games and had 37 tackles. Wilkes has started 0-3 (0-2 in Middle Atlantic Conference play) after a 34-14 setback to Delaware Valley on Sept. 15 in Edwardsvil­le. CAYLA DAVIS (THE HILL

SCHOOL) » The freshman from Gilbertsvi­lle has started all eight games on defense for the Columbia women’s soccer team. She scored her first collegiate goal in a 5-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Sept. 10 in New York City. It was the second goal of the game and it came early in the second half. The Lions are 3-4-1 after dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to St. Joseph’s on Sept. 17 in Philadelph­ia. The Columbia defense has given up 12 goals with two shutouts thus far.

GABRIELLE VAGNOZZI

(SPRING-FORD) » The sophomore has been the scoreron-the-spot for the St. Joseph’s women’s soccer team. She has four goals and two assists for 10 points for the 6-2-1 Hawks. The 5-foot-3 forward opened the season by scoring with 5:59 remaining for a 3-2 victory over Bucknell on Aug. 20. On Sept. 3, her goal with 2:26 left in regulation tied the game and St. Joseph’s went on to defeat Towson 4-3 in overtime. Then on Sept. 17, Vagnozzi scored 38 seconds into the first overtime for a 3-2 victory over Columbia. She had an assist in a 2-0 Atlantic 10 conference opener over Richmond on Sept. 21. Vagnozzi was named A-10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman after she scored three goals and set a school record with 11 assists for 17 points.

JASON BURNS (DANIEL

BOONE) » The junior used his head and it helped the Chestnut Hill men’s soccer team score a 2-1 victory over Dominican (N.Y.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Sept. 16 in Philadelph­ia. Dominican led 1-0 until Burns tied the game when he scored on a header at the 85:02 mark of the game. Then, with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, he sent another header into the back of the goal for the game-winner. They were the 5-foot-11, 160-pound forward’s first goals of the season. The Griffins are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play after the Dominican victory.

VICTORIA CRUCIANI (POPE

JOHN PAUL II) » The 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker leads the West Chester women’s volleyball team in total blocks (32) and solo blocks (seven). She also stands third on the squad with 77 kills starting all 11 matches and all 36 sets. Cruciani has a solid .425 attack percentage and has scored 96.5 points. The Golden Rams are 10-1 after a 2-1 performanc­e in the Kutztown Tournament Sept. 15-16 in Kutztown. Cruciani had 23 kills and 10 total blocks in the three matches and 11 sets.

KAYLA SMITH (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » The senior midfielder is a key defender on the Indiana women’s soccer team, the Hoosiers 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten Conference after a 1-0 victory over Michigan State on Sept. 14 and a 2-1 loss to Michigan on Sept. 16. Smith has started 67 of the 68 games she’s played in during her career including all 10 this season. She had an assist in a 3-3 non-league tie with North Texas on Sept. 10 giving her four goals and six assists for 14 points for her career.

JACKIE LERRO (POPE JOHN

PAUL II) » The Lynchburg freshman field hockey standout likes playing games in Reading. The 5-foot forward scored her first career goal in a 3-1 victory at Alvernia on Sept. 9. On Sept. 10, she scored four goals, including the gamewinner in a 5-1 triumph at Albright. She added a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Frostburg on Sept. 13 in Frostburg, Md. and now has six goals and an assist for 13 points for the Hornets, who are 5-1 after suffering their first loss, a 6-0 setback to Mary Washington on Sept. 16 in Lynchburg, Va.
